250r leaky base gasket- need help

hey everyone i just got a 81 250 r and i noticed the oil leaks out where the jug goes onto the crank case on the left side. so i was thinking the base gasket was bad. how important is it that i change this and how soon should i do it? and should i not drive it until i fix it??

Todd if the base gasket is leaking it is critical that it is fixed before you ride it.
Are you sure that the oil isn't coming from the exhaust flange and running down the cylinder and laying on the top of the case in that area?
If the base gasket is leaking and oil is present there that means that air can be entering the cylinder there also. That would create a lean condition which could lead to catastrophic failure of the engine.
You might try to check the torque of the base nuts. If they aren't tight enough you can be sure that, that is the problem. The best way to check for leaks is to do a leakdown test.

You can get the base gasket from honda, but it would be spendy. I would replace all the top end gaskets, as you arent supposed to re-use the head gasket anyways, especially if its who knows how old. The head and jug can be removed in the frame, but it is easier to work on the motor on a bench if you ask me, but its your call. One place you can get a top end gasket kit would be at denniskirk.com ,, I usually have good luck with them. Otherwise, you can check ebay, or a local cycle shop in your area should be able to order it for you. Good Luck!
