200x was the sporty 200 with front and rear suspenions and manuel clutch
200m had electric start and the 200s was the basic model both were semi auto and hardtails

The X stands for Cross Country. The S is for "sport". The R is for racing. E would be electric start and if its ES it would have electric start and reverse, and likely shaft drive (the 250 SX and ES big red).
THE 80's RAGE! Currently owns:
81, 85 Yamaha Tri Moto 125
83 Yamaha Tri Moto 200 x2
82,83 Yamaha Tri Moto 175 project
85 Yamaha Tri Z 250
84 Kawasaki Tecate 250
84 Honda ATC 70
85 Honda ATC 350X
84 Honda ATC 250R
(2) 84 Honda ATC 200x
82, 83 Honda ATC 185s
81 ATC 200
Lots of other parts and bikes
the es I don't "think" it had reverse (coul dbe wrong as i thought only the 250s had reverse), but it did have a "shaft drive" with electric.
breakdown.
200 (82-83) = normal 200 cc pull start trike no front suspension
200s (83-85) = sport and front suspension
200e (82-83) = pull start and electric start (pull is backup) hi/low trans chain drive
200es (84-85) = pull and electric start, shaft driven hi/low trans and some had reverse but i cannot confirm this as i have not seen one myself.
200x-gen1 (83-85) = (kickstart only) autocross (motocross track style) this was the 4-stroke racer type trike with front and rear suspension. rear has heigth adjustability but depending on the setting can cause the spring to be stiffer.
200x-gen2 (86-87) =(kick start only) rearest of the 200cc trikes. redesigned engine and rear suspension system, also front is slightly better designed and i think maybe slightly longer travel as well.
hope this helps.

200S = Small
200M = Medium
200E Big Red = Large
It couldn't be any more straightforward or intuitive?
PS. Please don't take this post too seriously - I know this isn't the nomenclature Honda had in mind - but it is an easy way to remember and a nice coincidence.
While I am at it:
200S could also stand for "Simple" or "Stripped down."
200M is "Middle of the road" or "Moderately equipped."

Awesome thread.
Thanks!
the ATC200 was made 1981-1983 as stated earlier
no suspension 1981 or 1982
1983 did have front suspension and was built very similar to the 200M with the axle in front of the lower legs of the forks.
the 200S was 4 or 6 inches shorter in length and had a smaller front end with the axle behind the lower legs of the forks.
