The noise from the rear end sounds like a bearring problem to me from the way you described it. To remove the front bearrings I usually do it like you are - with a
and punch or
and chizzel. Sometimes you have to beat the living hell out of them before they will go. Make sure to hit the outside of the bearring, thats the race that has to come out. If you can get a long enough chizzel, and hit it hard enough, it could split the bearring in half, or crack it a bit, allowing for an easier time. Also, I would recommend heat from a propane torch. Get it real hot, then give it hell. Good luck!
