Help with dodge 318 (AC compresser) can I run without one?

    Hey guys,

driving my truck today, its a 98 dodge 318 with AC. The compresser bearing is SHOT!

long story short, going to cost 1200 to get me a new one up and going.

I have never used AC nor care for it when I got windows.

So I know other 318's dont have one (compresser). Can I remove it and just run a shorter belt like the non AC 318 models?

Can this be done? Help Suggestions? Anything?

    thanks,

    josh-

You mean the compressor that pumps the freon?

Yes..Most car parts stores sell a bypass kit with new belt and bypass pulley.
You just remove the compressor and order the kit for your truck..Install the bypass pulley and bracket, and sized belt that comes with the kit.

If the system is full of freon, it must be removed within local EPA laws.
It takes special equipment to remove the freon..
Or you can go to the junkyard and get a used compressor for 50 -100 bucks.
Here is where my long useless list of stuff nobody cares about should go...

    Kintore,

This is what you need provided your truck is on the list, but you remove the A/C Compressor, bolt this on and re-use your old belt:

    increased fuel mileage too!

whatever you do, do NOT cut the copper lines with bow cutters to vent the freon...

He won't, but he will cut the aluminum lines

He's probably out of gas anyhow, doesn't seem like he gives a crap about AC....... Being in Canada, I bet it isn't used a whole lot.

Thumbs up RecerXXX for the link cheap too!

kintore get a junk yard A/C compressor and make it into a air compressor. it only takes about $25 in fittings. fill up tires at the races.

i did it to my 82 toyota truck i used to rock crawl with.

If you want to fix your A/C go on Ebay and search for you truck model A/C compressor.

    http://desc.shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nk...sacat=0&_rdc=1

I don't reccommed going to a yard and buying someone elses SH!T. Around me you'll get mugged for a compressor. I redid my A/C 2 seasons ago for a few buck more than used, with one of these kits off of Ebay. Yes the pump is made over seas, but my quality american made GM pumps(yes 2 of them @ over $500 a piece), both took a dump (look up "GM Black Death), the inside of the compressor basically detonates and contaminates everything. Yes everything was either flushed or replace to get rid of the previous contamination. With the cost of one of these "cheap" kits does the trick, I actually freeze my azz off now. With over 180K on my 1997 Yukon, I'm not looking to waste a cool $500+ on another compressor, I can put another 2 of these on. It actually is quieter than my GM pumps. If I find the guys card who I got my stuff from, I'll post it up, he was a crazy southern dude but really cool(no pun intended).
