So the real question is this.....do I do new piston rings and stuff this time? I really don't want to get that into rebuilding this thing....And do I have to take the cylinder out to replace the chain tensioner?

The cylinder should be fine to leave on - that is if you can fish the timing chain up through the slot. Did the motor smoke at all? Did you ever do a compression test? If it seemed ok, you could probly use the piston and jug that are on it, but may want to take it apart anyways while your at it, and check the clearance between the piston and cylinder, and ring end gap, etc. I assume you are putting new top end gaskets in anyways, so it wouldnt hurt to take off the jug are have a look, if everything checks out, re-use it. Check the service manuals, and you will be in ok shape. Good luck.

Rebuilt the top end as in new piston, rings, gaskets, valves, and seals? I got my rings on ebay. Honda over here cost $50 + for the rings i called them, but I got them on ebay for around $30. Remember, you have to go by with what piston you have. You have to use sudco (honda) rings on a honda piston, or Wieseco on a Wieseco piston , etc, etc.
Heres a link to one guys store. Type somthing like ATC rings or somthing similar on the top left search bar, and scroll down to find the size you need. Do a ring end gap measurement first to see where your at. http://shop.ebay.com/ody_parts/m.htm..._from=&_ipg=25

Thanks!
I am concerned cause I live in a city in California and there is maybe 1 or 2 places to legally ride and the trails are quite long and narrow so if this breaks down off on the trail I am really screwed.....I want a reliable bike to ride![]()

Thanks again to Erics350x! I am going to try and pull off the alternator flywheel and look and see if anything else is chewed up.

Is it safe to spray WD-40 into the case around the crank, flywheel, etc to clean out any metal flakes that may be down there?

yeah, and if you're looking to keep rust off out of your cylinder, you can coat that down with WD40 too.
It sure looks like the bolt backed out and the sudden stop sheared it and also abruptly stopped the timing chain and or tensioner.
It may have sheared the flywheel key too.....
I'd flush it out, grind down any burrs and once it runs a bit, take the clutch cover off and clean the oil rotor and the oil screen.

I agree with DC. i think tye backed out and when you went into gear it loaded them own, also anotehr thing I tought of is if sometihng insde the case broke (gear) it coudl have forced the crank to suddently stop causing the top end to snap like it did. (a 185s motor i was going to use has thew same issue, gear inside broke forced the crank to stop suddently and trashed the top end and the bottom too.
I would not want to use that motor at all until I took it appart and inspected everything. Every bolt, nut, gear, washer, everything!
then I'd put it together and use a new piston and refreshed top end. if you have the $, now's the time for a weisco piston!![]()

That bolt and the shearing action tell me a story...........
I don't think the cam chain and or tensioner failed until that bolt backed off enough to hit the back of the PG housing/casting - thats when all hell broke loose![]()

That's a bummer because I really don't know if I have the money or know how to completely rebuild this motor, I have rebuilt the top end and it was fine but after this I just don't know. It sucks cause I just spent $159 in back fees to register this thing to ride it and now I can't....Maybe it's time to just part it out![]()

if your going to part it out whats the harm in tearing the whole thing down and checking. the only cost to you if nothing is bad is gaskets. otherwise the problem in front of you is not to bad. an entire top end including piston you can rebuild/replace for under 200. pull it apart check the tranny. clean out the case real nice. are those bolts the right bolts? they look kinda cheap compared to any ihave seen on a cam gear. if there to weak the head will streach slightly and they wont stay as tight as a stronger grade bolt.
Looking for some smaller style tires like the r's have, just 2 back tires. pm please.
The problem is I bought this as a cheap project and it's turning into an expensive project.....I could have bought a much nicer and running 200x at this point....I am going to put the new cam chain tensioners in, new sprocket, new chain, new base plate and new bolts and give it ago. If it doesn't work I'll probably just store this thing away until I have more time and money to throw at it. As much as I love 3-wheelers I am not in an area that is great for them so it is not my priority at the moment, I thought I could just rebuild the head and have a decent running ATC, I was wrong.

well checking the tranny is not to bad. a flywheel key is like.. what 5 bucks. drain the oil check for any metal. if you can shift through all the gears nicely i dont think it was a tranny issue at all. and your flywheel key is the only thing i see being wrecked on the bottom end. it looks like the bolt just backed out until it hit the housing. then was forced into the CDI housing? i dont think you will have any issues after replacing oil, cam chain/tensioners. and checking the flywheel key. it looks like a straight forward problem from the pics.
