    Question 185 exhaust question

I recently tore apart my 185 and 200e Big Red for top end rebuilds and I had a question regarding the exhaust on my 185.

First of all, although my 185 was running a wiseco piston, I am going to replace the jug and piston with a stock 200e jug and piston that I have due to the fact that the original jug was chewed up from the previous owner letting the timing chain slap too much and it ate into the cylinder side of the jug's timing chain opening. So, it is going to be a 200 instead of a 185 after the rebuild is done.

Anyway, my question is this, the 185 has what looks like an aluminum baseball bat cut down and clamped into the stock head pipe for an exhaust. It is angle cut on the end, but there is no restriction in the exhaust at all such as any baffles or anything. It is fairly thick walled aluminum too, so the opening where it is clamped into the stock headpipe is only about a 1/2 to 9/16 of an opening in the center.

Will this cause any problems being a straight through pipe without any kind of backpressure, other than the restriction from going down to such a small hole where it clamps into the headpipe and the obvious noise level?

The loudness isn't a concern where I ride and actually it has a pretty good cackle when you rack it out, so I'm mainly concerned about how this will affect the performance of the motor and whether or not is needs to have some more restriction to have the proper backpressure for the motor to run properly.

Will it cause a problem being such a small opening where it clamps into the headpipe as well?

I do not know how much, if any, backpressure these motors need to run right, so I thought I would throw this one out there for the motor and exhaust gurus on here.

How will this exhaust affect the carb adjustments or jetting? It seemed to run great before, but it smoked, so that is why I tore it down to rebuild the top end. It didn't seem to run too rich or too lean. Also, it is running a stock style air filter with an outer dust cover on it inside the stock air box as well. I don't know how this will affect the exhaust decision, but I wanted to point this out.

Does anyone have any suggestions for an exhaust on this bike, other than shelling out a couple hundred bucks for a new complete exhaust? The budget is pretty much tapped out after top end rebuilds for both bikes, so I'm hoping to either run the exhaust as it is for now, modify the current pipes, or build up something from scratch even if possible, but buying a new exhaust is pretty much not an option.

As always, I greatly appreciate any and all replies.

    Thanks!

Believe me AutoXer, I've been looking and trying to find something.

That was the whole point of this post. If I had the money, or didn't think it would be that long until I had the money to buy something else...then I would just buy something else and wouldn't worry about what it's got now.

I can get a complete new exhaust for around $120 from Dennis Kirk, but coming up with the $120 is the problem.

With the way things are these days, it may be months before I get enough extra cash saved up again and I really don't want to let the bike just sit for several months or longer if there is not going to be a problem running the pipe like it is or even making some modifications to it so that I can still ride it for now until I get the money to buy something else that's better later on, whether it's a used exhaust or a new one.

Even the used ones are a little out of my price range at the moment from what I've found on ebay.

Even if I find one at a decent price, then they want $50 or more for shipping which makes it just about as expensive as buying the new one from DK.

The point never was to use this setup forever.

I just wanted to know if it would cause any problems to the newly rebuilt top end that I am in the process of putting in if I run this exhaust for a while.

So, does anyone have any thoughts on this?

I don't think any one can say if it will be "alright" or not with out seeing it and even then its your investment so you need to decide if you want to risk a $200? top end because you don't have $100 to get a brand new exhaust. People run these with wide open exhausts on them but for break in I personally like to have some back pressure to help the rings seat and to take care of your valves and to be able to jet your motor properly. Race motors are run wide open and do fine but they also are torn down frequently

I'm sure another member has one for sale somewhere cheaper then that, who cares what it looks like as long as it functions, paint that pipe and slap it on your ride...

I have an open DG pipe on mine with no baffles or packing (ill do that soon though) and it runs good, but my motor was broke in already....

Autoxer is a good dood, i would trust what he tells you... I have always had open pipes on all my rides, even my intruder 1400 and they all had no problems as long as they get jetted properly...

you will lose low end power and gain some topend 4 strokes run fine with open exhaust as long as its not bent down at the end or restrictive in spots

Thanks for all the info guys.

And I hope you didn't think I was trying to dismiss what you were saying AutoXer. I agree with everything you said, but I'm still left with the reality of either running the exhaust I have until I can find something better, or letting the bike sit until that time comes.

I appreciate everyone's responses and I will be getting something to replace this exhaust with as soon as that is a possibility or at the very least, I will modify this exhaust to give it more backpressure before I attempt to break in the motor.

    So how about it?

Anybody out there have a good stock muffler or complete exhaust that they would want to get rid of really cheaply?

I don't care what it looks like as long as it functions and it's usable until I can scrape up enough dough to get a new system later on?

If so, drop me a pm and i'll get back to you.

    Thanks everyone!

I've seen a 185 before that had a muffler like this one for a garden tractor. The exhaust was strait all the way back until it went into the muffler.

Well, it's a little more than I really wanted to spend, but I just bought this complete Cobra exhaust for my trike:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...7;3AMEWNX%3AIT

It is supposed to still have the baffles in tact and is complete, so should be a lot better for breaking in my new top end, I would think anyway.

Has anyone had any experience with the Cobra pipes?

Are they very loud like the DG pipes?

Anyway, just thought I would pass the info along and see what you guys think of my purchase.

    Thanks again...

Thats a score! I had a Cobra on one of my 200x's and it was very loud in my opinion, but sounded good. I would like to see you old exhaust, sounds interesting.

Thanks AutoXer, hopefully that system will work out good on it. I don't know if it is the stalker or the utility version of the muffler, but either way it will be better than an aluminum baseball bat.

Yeah, Hancadam, I couldn't pass up the price on that being a complete Cobra system.

Here are the links to my gallery where you will find some pics of the current "louisville slugger" exhaust on my 185...lol *(if you click on the pic it will enlarge the pics to full screen)*

If you have any problems with the site, please let me know....

The last pic is the current condition of my 185 trike. I'll get some pics posted in my gallery of the "after" results once I get a little further along with this trike.

I also have a pic or two of my '83 Big Red in the gallery, so check it out too if you want. It is actually in really good shape for the age. Now that the motor is rebuilt, I just need to get something done with the front shocks...preferable before the front wheel falls off....lol....they are getting really bent forward and need replaced soon.

    Thanks again everyone!
