    400ex Three Wheeler

hey have anyone or know anyone who has made a trike from a 400ex or something simillar to it. Ive been tossing around the idea of modifing my 200x with the rear portion of the 400ex frame but dont really want to hack my X frame, then a few of you guys have opened the idea of inverted forks and Ive saw some of ya'lls dirt bike framed 3W's any ideas would be great maybe some info on what dirt bike would be best and what to do about a hub and axle please give me input thanks

It has been done before but not sure if it ever worked out. Read the whole build thread not too long ago but did not save the link. Im sure someone here can dig up the link. I think you will run into more troubles than it is worth, considereing you could build a 350x to kick a 400ex and the only fall back of the 350 is no electric start.

Dragging up an old thread. I was sent a link to a site where a guy was converting a 400ex into a 3 wheeler. He makes his own frame.
Does anyone know who I'm talking about? Can't find the link.

I thought about the same thing. I like the 400ex trike idea better than a 450R. I wouldn't ever need all the power of a 450R and considering how much cheaper a 400ex is to a 450R, it appeal to me more. Where are you in east Tn? I'm between Greeneville and Erwin, I didn't think there were any other trikers around here.

Thanks, no wonder I could not find it searching 400ex converted to 3 wheeler.
I have a fat paddle kit to convert my 02 KX500 and want to have the fat tire on the front also. I want to buy a front end from TPC.

I'm more into dirt bikes and dual sport bikes. I have a group of frends that are into 3 wheelers so I bought the Big Red 250 so I could fit in.
The main city owned riding area here in Oklahoma City won't alow 3 wheelers so we ride at one of the groups 160 acres.
Quite a few trikes go to Little Sahara Oklahoma, so yea, still a few of us as you go South.

The 400ex trike has been in my mind for some time. The only way I could see it being done is to build the oil tank into the down tube like the xr 400 and use a xr tank but you would have to fab up your whole upper frame because it is two rails on top not single like a atc. Prolly have a very long wheelbase when it would be finished. What has really got my gears turning now is a 300ex trike look at the frame almost looks like a trike frame if you cut the front off. Found this pic of a frame online. I think you could Just fab up a neck to accept a trike triple or use a trike neck to pull it off. What do you guys think? I dont own a 300ex but maybe I need to buy a old one to see if I can pull it off.

    400ex three wheeler

There is a 400ex 350x conversion on ebay now! They used the back 3/4 of 400ex and front 1/4 of 350x. Look it up!

That is a terrible conversion. But, it can be done. The person who did it definitely didn't take their time...

I think its a great idea, I'd love to have one. The thing I don't like about the 450s is they are less reliable and less durable than a 2-stroke. Yes the power of a 450 can't be beat but the trade off is just too great for me.
All of my friends and I jumped on the 450 band wagon when they came out and the cranks locked up on every single one of them, and most of them mulitiple times. Luckily we all got extended warranties so it was on Hondas dime. We changed oil religiously with Honda syn oil.
My brother has changed out over 10 locked up Honda 450 cranks. I read a lot that this was fixed in 06 but my brother has chaged a bunch of those cranks out as well. I'll take a 400ex any day. Plus a 400 is a larger engine, with a better head and better parts availability than a 350X. Plus you get electric start and reverse (if thats your thing) if its newer than 04.

I know oldschoolin 86 converted his 400ex to a 3-wheeler. I saw a vid of him riding it before it was completely finished but he seems to have fallen off the face of the earth so I don't know what ever happened with it.

Yes, it can and has been done, but is it really worth all that work just to have an electric start 350x? Your best be would be a frame swap with a 350x or 250r frame and a 400ex motor and sub frame. Hybrids are alot of work to build correctly, but dont get me wrong, I will never regret the time and money I have in my 450. I love it more and more everytime I ride it and work on it.

I love a 350x as much as the next guy but they really aren't in the same leauge as a 400ex. Yes they can be built to hang in a drag race but theres more to riding than just that.
A 400ex 3-wheeler (vs a 350x) will have more power stock, more performance options, all parts available at the dealer, 50 more cc's, RFVC head, Pro-Link suspension, electric start and likely reverse. (400ex has been built for more years with reverse than without). The 400ex 3-wheeler linked in the above ebay auction is listed as an 06 so that would have reverse. To each their own but I'd absolutely love to have a 400ex 3-wheeler.

I did a search on the forum to see if anyone has put a 400ex motor in a 350X frame. I couldn't find anything. Has anyone tried this or contemplated doing this? If so, what are the pros and cons? Did the frame have to be modified? I have a 86 350X that I bought as a spare bike. I was thinking of turning it into a trail bike and a 400ex motor would be the icing on the cake since it has electric start and reverse. My other option is to put a Goki starter on the 350X motor and use my foot as reverse (as I have done for over 20yrs now!). Ultimately I would like the 86X to have bigger tires, electric start, a rear rack, a front fender rack, tow ball, tank bag, a silenced exhaust system. Reverse would make it a complete package but isn't a deal breaker.

Any 400ex motors in a 350X out there?
