No trikes. Too old, too crippled. Unless I find one I can't live without!

Propane torch always does it quick and easy. Just burn the carbon till a bit red then scrap away with a flat head screwdriver.

If it's gooey at all, you'll find sandblasting to be a chore.

And if you recover the sand, it will be contaminated in future use.....

Soot is generally acidic on the Ph scale, so you would want an alkaline cleanser such as ammonia. I've never done it to a pipe myself but, I used to be a disaster restoration technician and have cleaned up after coutless fires and furnace puff backs and have cleaned damn near everything but a muffler. Good luck, let us know how you made out.
If you can't fix it with a , its an electrical problem.

If it is a steel muffler just take it off and throw it in a fire. Does not need to burn long. Once the oil is heated up enough just take it out of the fire and let it smolder. Aluminum ones I leave on the bike and heat with a propane tourch.
