I dont know, in all honesty a red tail would be one of the last snakes i would want to keep. The one you had must have been awesome, they are usually quite protective and snappy. I would get a Ball python, in my experience they are very lovable and extremely nice snakes. Great for children, easy to keep as long as its a good feeder. Snakes are pretty clean, as far as salonella poisoning goes, i have never seen that ever happen. but i do wash my hands and my kids hands religiously after handling them, which im sure greatly reduces the risk of anything happening. I just bought zepher, my new ball for 60 CAD.

I had a red tail boa when I was a kid. Got it when it was just a baby and kept it until it was about 5 and a half feet long I'm guessing. It did strike a couple times. Got me perfectly around the wrist once. Weird sensation. I counted 80 punctures. Didn't feel like a bite or a cut though. Closest thing I could compare it to would be an electric shock actually.

I have heard Ball Pythons are far less likely to bite. Never owned one personally. I've had probably a dozen different breeds, all when I was a kid. Mostly species common to the midwest like various rat snakes, king snakes, etc. I begged like hell for a Burmese python that was already 14 feet long but Mom wouldn't go for it. Probably had something to do with it literally being big enough to ingest me at the time.

I had a pet Mon-chi-chi back when they came out in the 70's. Guess I'm getting old, too....lol

....AND, it was bought at....(click on 2nd pic)

Mine contracted Japanese-monkey-rabies and the store wouldn't take him back....so I had to put him down in about '81.

Very sad. Hard to talk about it still.

Actually Burmese are pretty mellow as long as they get handled a lot. Reticulated Pythons can be pretty mean. By far the meanest Python I've ever seen is the Green Tree Python. Freaking nasty tempered things.

Australian Shephard, 4 cats and fish. Are fish pets?

Anyways... I used to have a Waterdragon lizard which died of old age, and a 5 foot ball python that got away a few summers ago. I'm certain that one scared a few neighbors.
