all names aside, i have ben around all this for 30 years total. i can tell you with certinty that the best and most talented Quad riders out ther started on 3 wheels. some of the young guys that have entered the 4 wheeler MX scene are not near what Gust, Far, Hitt, Denton,...... were/are. the young guys do not have roots in 3 wheeler and it shows up in there ride style.

also some of the best riders out there, 3 wheelers or 4, have no names. i have witnessed some amazing things that i don't think some of the above mentioned riders would consider doing.

I know exactly what you're talking about. Another thing most people don't know is the best street motorcycle riders have roots on 2 wheels in the dirt.

i call them the design that would of killed trikes with or without a ''ban''.

i have rode since the early 80s and till the 90s only had trikes. i do agree that trikes make you a better quad rider but to think that a trike can compete at nowadays pro quad level is crazy.

i have fond memerys from my trike days but like alot of things they had there time in the sun IMO.
    80s......185 atc, Yamaha tri-moto 200, 85 200x with tons of work

This! Anyone who disputes this is blinded by their 'love' of trikes. An 86 250R three wheeler just could not hang with, not only a 'modern' 450 quad but even an 86TRX (if both were ridden by two riders of the same skill level mind you)

Even today's hybrid quad/dirtbike converted 450 three wheelers would be put to shame if they ever ventured onto a track with the 450 quads.

I LOVE three wheelers and they are n important part of ATV history and obviously have a niche group of followers/fanatics - but if anyone really thinks they can hang with quads they are silly.

they both have pros and cons. yes when it comes to MX or woods racing, you will go faster on a quad. when it comes to hill climbing or free riding, there is very little difference, at that point it is all the rider.
