Tri-z Kicker Won't Return Up without help

On one of my z's the kicker gets hung up in the down position and won't return up unless I place my foot under it and pull up on it. I took off the cover and the spring isn't broken but may be weak. How can I tell for sure what the trouble is so I can fix it so it returns up after kicking it to start it?

    Thanks

If the spring is loose on the gear its junk. Should be nice and tight.

    kicker

I noticed that there was no gasket on the kicker part from the previous owner just a little sealer, I read on one of the threads that if the gasket is not on the kicker part it can offset the gearing and affect it also so that the kicker won't return on it's on. Do you know if this is true...though I am going to make sure its on there when I put it back together.

    Thanks

yes that is true! it will bind.. make shure you got that washer also. I would pull the clutch cover and inspect that spring and gear, make shure the spring tab in in the groove..

    Kicker better But

I pulled the cover and installed a washer that was missing from the kicker gears and added the gasket and this stopped the binding and it returns up now as it should. But there is still one small problem. Sometimes when you press down on the kicker the gears don't engage and the kicker just goes down and comes back up without turning the engine. Then on the next time down it catches and engages and turns the engine as it should. Is it the big spring causing this even though it seems ok?
    Thanks.

Ps. Pulled cover and checked gears again and found that the spring clip on the back of the gear was not in the slot right like the pic above shows. Now it kicks back just great. Thanks for the insight and info.
