    Question two piece die question

I've got one bolt/lug on my Tri Z hub that has the threads messed up only at the top of the bolt. I've tried tapping(with a ) this bolt out of the hub like I did on the other hub, but it won't budge an inch. I tried making a press from a C clamp and socket but that it not moving it either. Since the problem with the thread is at the top of the bolt, I can't get a die on it to recut it. Is there such a thing as a two piece metric die that you can clamp on the bottom of a bolt and then spin it off to re-cut the threads? I thought there was, but I can't seem to find one in 10mm size.

    Any other ideas?

    thanks

I use a die grinder with 80 grit pad on it, and taper the mushroomed threads down so I can get the die back on the stud, then just clean it up as normal.

Can you just use a thread file or is it beyond that repair?

Thanks Mosh...I don't have a die grinder and don't think I could be accurate enough with a regular grinder.

Tecate..I didn't even think of a thread file! I was in the process of cleaning up the other bolts with the die and when this one didn't work I just didn't change my mindset. I'll see if I can find a thread file later. Looks like that might work. Thanks!

They do have dies that are "adjustable"with one place split open and an adjusting screw. Still, I'd file the moshed (NO PUN INTENDED ) part off and then try a die.

Sometimes a flat file, then a triangular file work wonders.......

I have a thread file, paid good $$ for it, but it doesn't seem to "cut" like you can with a normal file.

Clamps will never get that off. But, if the hub were off, a socket just larger than the back of the stud fit over it and placed on a solid surface, and last a BFH and brass punch on the front threaded portion; Then that stud would come out (If it's made like Honda and not in a blind hole)...

    Gluck!

yes they make dies that are two piece, they use a spring around them to stay together after they are on. I know for a fact that mac and snap-on make them. Randomly looked at a used set yesterday that I might go buy Friday if it's still there.
