Thanks for all of the replies and info i got this fired up to where it would run, and it's not healthy. I only let it run for about 5 seconds but it has a terrible slapping noise in the piston, rod, crank dept and doesn't seem to have the compression it should. The kicker feels fine but something is obviously not right. I'm gonna dwell on it for a day or two, but its most likely gonna have to go to the chopping block, i guess i should have bought one that was already rebuilt...

Rings could cause a slapping? What would that mean it was a little rusty or something for sitting from 15 years and was froze before he kicked it over, so a ring broke/cracked? If its only rings i will fix it but i'm not looking into a 400$ repair...

If you are at all handy with a wrench and know how to read and comprehend a service manual, you should have no problem at all wit doing a motor rebuild. Its probly time to do a complete rebuild anyway, especially if it has been sitting and not even started for 15 years and you plan to ride it. It wont cost near $400 to do it if you can do it yourself. A slapping noise could be a number of things, best thing to do is pull the jug and give everything a good look over. You will likely see what it is from there. It could be a worn cylinder, broken piston skirt, bad rod bearring, or main crank bearring.

Killer you bought the last one i wanted since i couldn't get off work that monday to pick it up. Anyway no hard feelings.

What would it cost to do this? I heli-coiled head studs on the other 83 i had, and work in a machine shop where .0051" is scrap, so i think i can pull it off i just dont want an insane parts cost. My other one had a dg head/copper gasket are all of these equipped with the copper gaskets? Thanks for the help, and killer if you wanna trade plus 400 let me know...

Good deal, glad someone has them is gonna keep them in one piece. I'm trying to get some things sorted out with alison and today i have the kids but the next time i get a chance to get in the garage i'll rip the top end off and see what's there. It'd be nice if i can get this thing running i'd hate to part it out. Anyway i'll keep you guys posted and will have pics posted so people that know they are looking at can tell me the parts can be salvaged or not...

Ok guys i'm hoping someone here can lead me in the right direction, i took the head off and got some pics. For a 25 year old cyl i think the bore looks great there are a couple .005 to .010 gouges but nothing is really tore up or visibly damaged. The piston is tight if i try to wiggle it around, but i'm still hope the issue is rings. These are pics as soon as i pulled the head. Let me know if i should take others, as i dont know much about motor work but i hope to get this thing to where i can ride it...

Looks like you have had some serious detonation in there.

The one thing i just noticed is if you look in the exhaust port the top of the piston is heavily damaged, its above the rings, but it looks almost like a crown with nicks taken out of the edges. Possibly why the head is so beat up???

You are definatly going to need to do either a hone to next size to clean up the cylinder, or a bore. The piston will also need to be replaced with oversized, along with new rings, circlips, piston pin, and wrist pin bearring. The machine was overdue for a rebuild anyhow. It looks like somthing got on top of the piston, and kept rattling around in there for some time, hence all the nicks. It could have been a piece of carbon, or the piston could have started flaking at the crown form overheating. It is a two stroke, and they need top end rebuilds all the time. The maintence you do to the new motor will ensure you a lasting top end. Good luck, and be sure to pull the jug and get some measurements, and check the lower con rod bearring and main bearrings. If you want to do it right the first time and have a lasting motor, replacing the main bearrings and seals would be a great idea.
