Considering mine has a new D.I.D. chain, new guide, and a new tensioner. You can guess of the lock collars loosen up when you take tension off the cap nut or you can verify that things are moving when you adjust the cam chain. To each his own. I like the piece of mind knowing when I loosen the tension cap that things are moving like they should.
I guess some of the things I do aren't in the shop manual, that's just the way it is.
