My opinion on the ATC BANN

I have been riding 3 wheelers since the mid 80's . I NEVER had a wreck on a 3 wheeler but I have had some bad spills on a 4 wheeler and a dirtbike. I see more wrecks on motorcycles and 4 wheelers than any model trike. The problem with a 4 wheeler is more weight and it was harder to get away from when it turned over on top of me from climbing a hill. The weight alone on some of the heavier more larger 4 wheelers can injure you. The 2 wheel motorcylce is a wreck waiting to happen, if you are not carefull you will lose control and must have a good balance to keep from falling over. The thing about motorcycles is you periodically put your feet on the ground for stability,,, and 3 wheelers are are dangerous and less stable? ...YA... RIGHT.. It is not the equipment , it is the operator. In my book the ATC is not dangerous at all, I think dirtbikes are the most dangerous. In all my years of experience I have rode many makes models of 4 wheelers ,motorcycles, 3 wheelers. I have to say the 3 wheeler was easier to control, more fun to ride. To make a long story short, it is the operator, not the machine that is dangerous. Just my opinion.

I agree about it being the operator not the machine. But I feel that 2, 3, and 4 wheelers are all equally as dangerous as the other. I enjoy riding 2, 3 , and 4 wheelers.. and I have crashed on all 3 of them in the past. There will always be situations that might possibly cause a crash. It's your job and mine to make sure we are ready with the proper safety equipment and training for us and our loved ones.

You are soo right, they are all dangerous. None anymore dangerous than the other , wear a helmet and the proper equipment and ride safe ! I havent bought a new ATV in years but if they were selling the ATC again I'd be first in line to buy one.

i've only fell off the back of a 3 wheeler rirding wheelies, and ran over my feet and up my leg a couple times... But none of them "accidents" hurt as much as sliding dirtbikes into trees, flipping over the bars, and none hurt as much as rolling my rincon 650 quad twice... ouch. and riding a wheelie on my quad hurts more if i fall off the back then a 3 wheeler, cause it is taller bigger and a longer fall... oh and my quad weighs 800-900 pounds, around 3 times as much as my trikes..

They are all only as dangerious in how you ride them. See my signtaure for the death reports of actual 3 wheeled related deaths/injuries. It is a funny read straight from CPSC and updated anytime there is a new report.

That made me laugh. Thanks for that. I'm passing that line onto my friends when they ask about my 3 wheelers.

Yeah it's unfortunate that they were banned from being manufactured via a Decree. The Decree has been lifted for about 10 years I think now. However, the market isn't there now for a three wheeler to be introduced. They will always be marked as dangerous by many people. I think the real issue was the time frame. Dealerships were selling three wheelers to anyone and there was no age limit to who could ride them. Once injuries happened on them, they looked unsafe and hence why the law of 16 years of age to operate anything above 90cc's is in place.

ok im 19...the ban was before my time. i would like to know about it. i know it was something about them being dangerous so the "nanny state" banned them. then from what i understand the ban was lifted in 98 or something like that.

three wheelers got a bad wrap because of idiot parents who let their kids ride little 60's 70's 90's without training or supervision, and when something bad happened they had to blame something or someone else for their own faults.that how most laws get on the books.

Yes I agree but it is crazy to think that 3 wheelers are any more dangerous than a 4 wheeler or dirt bike. They just wanted someone to blame but I think there would be a very good market in new HONDA 3 wheelers such as the 87 200X 87 200R 250R 350X if they started where they left off from in 1987. Just think of how many people like me who are in there 30's who would buy a new ATC from back when they were young in the 80's not to mention the younger generation buying old 3 wheelers now.You would be very suprised how many would, not to mention that the U.S. population has increased since the 1980's .BUT,,, I think there might be alot of contavercey among people who hate 3 wheelers if they were to build them again, HONDA might not want to stiir things up, not that sales would be a problem,, but that's my opinion.

We've been having this discussion for years, and probably will keep having it. Saying 3-wheelers are more dangerous than 4-wheelers isn't inaccurate, but it's an oversimplification. There's two main issues. First, the front end is very light, and they are therefore prone to flipping over backwards, especially on hill climbs. I've done it myself. However, the front end lightness is part of the appeal for many people, including me. Someone said in another thread recently that driving one of these big modern quads is like driving a cow, and I agree. Second, the geometry of the triangular footprint means that 3-wheelers will not be as stable as a quad running sideways on a hill. I think most of us know this, but we just like to argue about it. It's really about the experience...the look, the feel, and the ride that you just can't get with a quad. Experienced 3w riders know that you have to use body english and leaning to keep the wheels on the ground, and that's all part of the fun! Anybody can plop their fat a** on a new 2010 Hondamaha Pig 800XL, and just push the throttle while the thing does everything including *shifting* for you. But let's face it, if the manufacturers had been allowed to continue to make bigger and bigger trikes, they would probably be just as unwieldy by now.

I said it before and I'll say it again....the Homeviedo and very reckless people had the 3wheeler banned. Dunkin Uncle Larry on the kids trike at the 4th party...caught on tape! Thanksgiving at the dunes, no helmet guy leaps to near death sideways landing....What made them more Dangerous than a 2 wheeled bike is, lack of balance need to ride them. Anyone could jump on one...especially the early models, which were dossel. Then the 250R hit the scene with huge popularity. When the Uncle Larry's jumpped on them with the idea...well it's just like the 110 I over wheelied last year...right? The Poor Uncle Larry's of the World got a rude awakening. The NEW breed 250's were fast...scary fast, and now took skills beyond stear, and brake. Real control of the motor(speed, power, gearing) and body position was needed to run em'. How do you tell a Rookie 3wheeler rider, when you get to the corner your gonna need to pin it to bring the backend around...just slide it a little. Until you become experanced a 250R is a Deathtrap in the hands of the unskilled rider. I'm not saying experance will make the trike less Dangerous. The experanced rider will know the limitations of the man vs machine to make them work to his or her advantage.
