    84 200X kick starter

So, I had bought this 84 200x, and the kick starter did not return. I bought the part of ebay, supposedly some guy makes them all special or whatever. I blew my wrist pin on the piston from an oil leak (went low on oil at WOT) so I go to rebuild the motor. It's been apart for like almost a year now, and the pieces sitting in a box.
So tonight, I start to figure out what is what again, and I go to replace the kick starter, and low and behold the spring in the starter is fine. Wonder why it wasn't returning? To tired to figure it out now. Got to read the manual, and see if it was in there right. Anyone ever experience this before?

Only a couple things I can think of that will cause this . #1 if someone took out the large bolt in the back of the case that holds the spring in & just put it back .
#2 if you install the outer kicker shaft cover (the one on the clutch cover) without a gasket . #3 possibly the spring has just lost its tension but I have never seen that before .

Hmmm interesting. do you have to wind the spring up when installing it? I still haven't read the manual yet, going to tomorrow.

About a half turn is all you have to wind it .

If someone took out the bolt, then the spring would not be in the hole that is on the shaft? Cause the spring was in the shaft, and the other end of the spring that hooks on the case was in the proper place.
