What is the best way to fix small holes in the tank?

I have a 185s tank with small rust pin holes in the bottom it looks like the person tryed to use jb weld lol.


I also have a nice 110 tank but it has a little rust inside the tank. where can i get thhat tank coating and what is it called. And is it hard to do?

Just kidding. Depending how bad it is, you may want to just find another tank. Otherwise you can cut and weld new pieces on ,then use one of those tank coatings to prevent further rust? It's a lot of work.

I wouldn't waste your time but if you must you can use an epoxy resin based filler, there's one called Leak Fix. Best to find a good replacement tank.

Hey I have a 185s tank if you are interested. It doesn't have decals and is half-sanded from when I was going to restore it, but it doesn't leak. I have no use for it as I don't have a 185s anymore.

i have a trx200 tank that has quite a few small holes on the bottom. can i get away with using lead body filler? a new tank is 200+ ship. and used are found very much

Ive never fixed a rusty/leaking tank yet. But i have used the tank sealers on customers tanks ive made to prevent rusting. POR-15 makes one just for bike tanks, its smaller so you have less waste. Call around to the local car parts places. Tell them what you want to do and they will most likly have a product there. Make sure you get tank cleaner also, it would make sence to package them togther since youll never really need just one. It will clean all the old varnish and scale out of the tank. Also dont plan on going riding the next day. WIth no circulation thru the tank it will probly be about a week before you can put fuel back in it. As for how hard, it easy. Just some brands have you baby sitting it. One i used wanted me to roll the tank every 4 hrs, another just said to slosh around to coat the hole thing then dump the extra out and let it dry.

i have the same problem with a 200x tank. someone on other forum said to use muriatic acid (can be bought at home depot or pool supply store) to clean the inside. its really nasty stuff, but it will take the rust right off. as for the holes, im still looking to fix the ones i got so i don't have any suggestions other than agreeing with using body lead filler.

If you use muriatic acid, make up a solution of baking soda and water (whole box of baking soda or more). I would make enough neutralizing solution to completely fill the tank. If you do not neutralize the acid it will continue to rust the tank. And will make things much worse.

I dilute the muriatic acid, about 50%, sometimes 25% of the tank isn't that bad. Let it sit in the tank till the tank looks clean on the inside. Than after draining the muriatic acid, fill immediately with the neutralizing solution.

Make sure to remove the petcock since it will dissolve aluminum.

A friend of mine used muriatic acid and didn't neutralize it and made some pretty large holes in the tank. But we were able to fix it using this stuff.

They make a kit that comes with cleaner and neutralizer, I used that on the tank he destroyed. It sealed well. If I were to do it again I would let the tank get good and warm in the sun, because at cooler temps the liner looks really uneven inside the tank. But it did work fine.

But if the tank is dented I wouldn't spend the money on the tank kreme kit. I would just use muratic acid, baking soda and JB weld and save my money for a tank that looks good and is clean on the inside. The tank we did would have been $250-400 used off e-bay.

Putty and JB weld are NOT GOOD REPLACEMENTS for metal... Weld up the holes, or have patches welded in and then put a POR-15 tank kit in... I have used many of their kits o wheelers, and even car tanks (worked in a resto shop) they work great to seal up pinholes... I wouldnt lead up a tank, but I have spent many hours removing lead... Kreme Koat is a crappy product in my opinion... I wounldnt give 10 cents for that crap. Muratic acid works great in a tank to clean out the big scale rust, but should be followed up with a POR-15 kit right after. The POR kit does take a while to cure, but is really a good product... Muratic acid will eat up rust and possibly find pinholes and weak spots you didnt know about, so do all these steps before you get your tank painted....

the trx200 tank is hidden under plastic anyway. so if its a ugly job im not to worried. but im afraid this tank may be to brittle for welding.
my plan was lead filler (if possible) then por15 it. im just not sure how the lead filler will work with a tank. i looked around but couldnt find to much info on it

I used solder, has been holding up for well over a month. Took all of three minutes.

Use a blowtorch to heat the tank, after sanding off the paint and getting all gas out. Then try to let the hot tank melt the solder. I had the exact same type of pinholes on my 200s.

In my opinion, Red-Kote is the best sealer for fuel tanks hands down. I' have personally used it and love it. Kreem sucks. Every tank i've seen done with Kreem has all the "bladder" floating around in it. I highly advise if you use Red-Kote that you follow the directions precisely. You can buy it by the quart at any Carquest auto parts store.

Sounds like Kreem really sucks, I just thought it was too cold when I used it, it was at the low end of the recommended temperature. It did work but I wasn't impressed with the results inside the tank, looked sloppy. That's why I was saying save the money and buy a new tank. I'll have to try out the Red-Kote when I re-do my CB550 tank.
