The VM carbs are not junk. They are actually quite reliable. What you need to do is a proper rebuild. The rebuild kits are cheap, and you can have it done and back to perfect working order in less than a 1/2 hr. Unless you are looking for something that performs better, I would say just rebuild the one you've got. If you are deadset on getting another carb, I would suggest a Keihin PJ oval which is one of the best performing oval slide carbs ever made. They are also very affordable. Or if you don't care about money, a Keihin PWK flatslide, or Mikuni TMX flatslide for the best in performance. But seriously, just rebuild the one you have.
