    Big Red Cold start fix

I know about the recall on a Big Red 250. I ordered a rebuild kit for my 86 off ebay from SHINDY. It comes with the cold start jet for the 85. I have another 85 big red and will rebuild that carb one day. I just wanted to let everyone know that kit comes with a cold start press in jet. hope this helps all. I love the Big Reds and i want to help everyone who has one. The kit was like 20 bucks. Happy wheelin!!!!

I been looking 4 ever for a fix.
Even bought a parts bike but the carb was THE SAME!!

My br is almost not worth starting in the winter but it runs like a dream and starts with 1/2 kick when warm.

Thought about drilling out the start jet etc etc etc etc aaaarggggghhhhhh

Even the electric starter won't fire it because it likes a swift kick in the right spot on the compression stroke.

I need this br on the farm EVERYday so it aint just a luxury for me, it's survival.

    tThanks

did you actually SEE the press in start jet in person?

    It was in the kit?

You got the factory memo re: the sheetmetal screw removal technique and the warning about breaking the casting?

I found tons of info on here when I used (85 cold start) for a search quote

Thanks for the illusion of hope.

I'll try to buy one before daybreak.

    SHINDY you say?

    YaY!

    (thanks)

My 85 BR will start when its cold... Takes 10 minutes of run time before I can shut the choke off... But at -15 to -20, I dont really want to move either...
No trikes. Too old, too crippled. Unless I find one I can't live without!

Yes i saw the jet. I have the jet. It is a shindy kit. The jet is about twice the size of the original. My dad baught his in 85 in August of 84 and it was done at the dealer later. He said it was a pain then one day he took it back for service and they did the update and he said a lot of mornings no choke at all. We still have it and it looks good 100% original and has been ridden at least 2 or 3 days a week since 84. I will post pics once day. I am restoring my 86 i have had for about 15 years. almost done.

    THANK you

I will call shindy tomorrow, they dont sell directly but they have a list of dealers.

I'm just in shock that you actually found them and saw that jet in person and have been thru it.

I've got blown discs and a bum leg and my electric start wont even start i\ the stupid thing when cold. (1/2 kick dream machine when warm, however)

With the bad jet it NEEDS a perfect kick on the compression stroke and thats all there is to it..well more like 10 perfect kicks in the perfect spot on the compression sroke.

You're really saving me unfathomable headaches since I'm also afraid to buy a replacement 85 carb from a junker because it may just be exactly the same as what I have.

ummmm now, we gotta be careful to NOT break the carb casting when yanking the old one out.

maybe warm the whole carb in an oven and some kinda cold on the jet, like one of those wart remover freeze things they sell at a drug store.

    True poetic justice

    thanks again

Hey no problem glad i can help. The original TSB on the problem said to install a sheet metal screw in the old jet and use a pair of side cutters to gently pull it out. then take a 5/16 punch and install the new one. 3wheeler.org had the tsb original article. good luck.

tons of calls today starting with the shindy carb kit importer in Milpitas, calif
but of course they only sell to distributors

and then I got bounced around from there.
    .
YOU are the only person in this country who knows for sure.

Can you see a shindy part number as 03-015? for the kit or a numver on the jet?

'cause I gotta go prepay for it special order type deal

and I promise these are my last questions

    Thanks
