Question $2000 to fix my 83' R. What do you think?

I recently brought it to a shop to see what was wrong with it and as i suspected the engine is pretty much beat crank, piston etc. there is already $400 into it to find out what was wrong with it. The total cost including tax would be $2000. What do you think. I could buy another one but could end up back in the same spot again. At least this way ill know it will be done right and will last a long time, plus i already have to pay $400 just to pick it up. Opinions anyone.

Someone is trying to bone you HARD. $400 for them just to break it down enough to find a bad conn. rod is B-S. It is literally a 20 min job to take the jug off. Ask em for the breakdown on what this $400 job entailed. I personally wouldnt pay it, then again I have never brought something to a dealer either.

    A crank re-rodding should be about 150
bore job and piston under 200
    crank bearings 50
    gaskets 50
Thats really about it, so long as everything else is good. A decent mechanic should be able to do that whole entire job starting with the whole bike in under 7 hrs so long as everything goes smooth.
I fail to see how they could possibly come up with 2g's.

That's ridiculous. Locally, we have some guys that do free estimates, not $400 estimates (hell, that is more than I PAID for my three wheelers), and that whole job could be done for a few hundred. Tell them if they want to bone men that hard, go to prison.

Any air cooled engine is a piece of cake. 1,5 hours in and out, unless bolts break..............

But, they don't budge on 80$ an hour labor and maybe they want 400$ just to rebuild the crank?? Who knows.

Then there are gaskets/ o- rings and whatever else is still available, maybe 75$??

Then there is a bore, hone and a piston kit, maybe another 150-200$??

Main bearings, every tranny bearing (is that in the quote?) another 200$ or so.....

Couple hours to split and re-assemble.

400$ to break it down like and merely diagnose the problem like Jeff said is WAY too much...............

I'd imagine it's closer to about 1000$-1200$ to rebuild that thing back to the 25yo reliability.

Your crank just needs the rod kit, the halves are good. Any experienced shop can press in that rod pin and true it up in an hour IMHO, but I have seen flat rate charges of about 75$ to replace and true a crank without parts. Then you add the cost of the rod kit.......

It's tough for you guys. I've won entire NOS 350X motors for 730$, and I know that there apples and oranges. But 2000$ is far high IMHO........

I'd do as much as I can myself, and let the shop rebuild the crank and bore the cylinder if needed. Not to mention that 2000$ doesn't even blast and PC or paint the cases!!

You can by a 20 ton press to install bearings for 200$, V blocks for another 15$ and a decent magnetic base indicator setup good enough for what you do for another 50-100$

I like investing in tools rather than paying for labor myself.....................

they put 4 1/2 hrs. into it to break it down. It needs a new crank kit which honda does not make anymore so they found a new crank kit that they can rebuild. The parts alone are 700$ bearings, rings piston bore. There was metal shavings in it so it was pretty beat. That price is a discount to because we bought numerous quads and motorcycles there, a Thundercat last week. At least it should last a long time.

It seems like a crazy amount of time breaking it down. Thats hard to explain. But I guess parts are more in Canada, so maybe a $1200 rebuild is $2000 over there. Does the $2000 include the $400 for just picking it up?

But if I had the money and was not mechanically inclined I would pay to have the motor professionally rebuilt, instead of getting another one that's going to need work too, might not be long before the other one will need some engine work. Treat it right and you'll get years of trouble free riding on it.

ya the 2000 would be the total including the 400 for tear down after taxes. After reading all the posts and estimates for parts I can see how all the things add up but the labor is where half of that is. I guess ill just look at it like im starting from scratch with a whole new engine. Thanks guys.

    $2000 is a discounted price?

You could buy a minty fresh liquid R for that, especially in this economy.

wont find a nice 250 liquid r around here for that. Won't know how long it would last or how much wear and tear it has on it either i guess.
