$2000 to fix my 83' R. What do you think?

The way I see it is, its Canada, the R (from what I here) is almost impossible to find. You don't rebuild engines, and you have the money to fix it. And no one can really tell you what a fair price is because all the prices people listed are local to where we live. Yeah the tear down time is long. But if the engine hasn't been apart in 20 years, then maybe there were some bad bolts there. Who know. You'll get a new engine, there will be a 250R still alive in Canada. And that's cool. I'm not trying to justify a $400 tear down, just that basically there are only 3 choices when your machine takes a crap:
1. Fix it yourself
2. Pay someone to fix it
3.Give up on it

And well who gives up on an R.

But I would say with those prices pick up a beater trike and learn wrenching. It would be a good project next winter. But that's just me. But as much as I love wrenching there are days when I just want to ride and would love to be able to just take my trike in somewhere and say, "Make it new, I feel like riding today."

I know where there is a 85 & 86 for sale that are not beaters. But every one wants to spend money
and time doing a fixer upper? Go figure eh.

Tri moto Where are you from? The 250r in canada is not rare at all. I have owned 3 1/2 (1982, 1983, 1985 frame, 1986) atc 250rs and i dont look at all for them. Go get a clymer manual or get the one from here and do it your self. Bearing replacement is the hardest thing to do and if you take your time they go in fine. If you are local i can do it for you. I know where there are 4 other air cooled 250rs.

Im from Ontario. I do have the clymer manual but only use it for small stuff. I told them to go ahead and fix it yesterday. I should have it back by the weekend and ill post how it turned out.

hey where are you in canada? a few weeks ago I bought a 86 R with a good runnig motor, for just under a grand, rest of the bike needs work but not another grand

i have about $500 in parts ( i did the labour) into my 83 250r i replaced all the bearings/seals, connecting rod and top end.

WOW 2000 is way to much for something you could do yourself for 1000-1200 but hope they do a good job and completely restore it for you too for that price.

i got a liquid cooled 85R really hard to find where i am im on Vancouver island. i bought it for $1000 and then dropped a crate motor that i got from the states for $1400 and plus 2 cases to rebuild the 86 motor that was in it and now i have 2 motors my bike is all original the fenders are oem not maier only thing that isnt oem is the tires

they put 4 1/2 hrs. into it to break it down. It needs a new crank kit which honda does not make anymore so they found a new crank kit that they can rebuild. The parts alone are 700$ bearings, rings piston bore. There was metal shavings in it so it was pretty beat. That price is a discount to because we bought numerous quads and motorcycles there, a Thundercat last week. At least it should last a long time.
