86 250R electrical problem

I recently purchased an 86 250R, and it had been running OK, but had sat for a couple years so I decided a good carb cleaning was in order. I took the carb off, cleaned it, put it back on, and the engine all of a sudden wouldn't fire!

Checked the plug to see if I was getting spark - NONE! Noticed the plug cap to coil connection was loose, so tried tightening on - wire was in bad shape so it wouldn't bite - so I changed the coil.

So with a new coil, plug cap, plug installed, figured it should start right up - NO! Still no spark!

Noticed the wires had been taped up near the kill switch, so took apart to have a look at this repair job - looked OK, but undid the wires and hooked them together, trying to bypass the kill switch. Still nothing, but did actually notice 3 sparks out of about 50 kicks - more than I had seen before!

If anyone could point me in the right direction on where to start trouble shooting this, please let me know. (I HATE ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS!!!)

the 250r electrical is very simple. remove the left side cover ans see it is is wet. clean it with some starting fluid and let it set in the sun for a few hours to dry. next check all the electrical connection for corrosion. unplug the kill switch and try it. if you unplug the kill swith you take it out of the loop. last check the grounds and be sure they have good contact. if all that fails it is time to get a fluke out and start checking the stator, coil, and cdi.
