Question Still no luck getting my 86 T3 running

Not sure what else to do. Got an 88 T4 flywheel off ebay and put on my 86 T3 and still it will only backfire. I'm getting fire, fuel and air and it won't crank to save my life. I found top dead center and them put the flywheel on. All 3 marks line up. (stator, flywheel and the mark on the crankcase. It has to be a timing issue, but not sure what to do different as far as timing it. Is the 88 T4 and 86 T3 flywheels the same? according to babbit's sports center, they have different parts numbers, but I have seen on this sight where folks are saying they are the same. If they are not, that would possibly explain my problem. Any help would be much appreciated

    Well, IMO
backfire through the exhaust is either too far retarded or possibly a bad stator, my KTM did that and the stator was cutting out. the retarded factor is used on cars, might transfer to you situation maybe?
Hope it helps, best of luck,

Thanks, Is there a way to test the stator? These things are not cheap at all. Hate to but one unless I know mine is bad. Know what I mean?

Is it a 4 stroke? Have you checked valve timing?

    Just something else to check

Bryan, one way to check if the fly wheel is correct is to make sure the magnet placement is correct.
I have a fly wheel off of eBay I just received and the fella done a wonderful job re-glueing the magnets in, very near oem look to be honest.
First thing I checked was his magnet placement and it is not right. With this fly wheel, I know it will spark, just not at the right time.
Here are a picture of how they should be laid out.
The 11 and 4 o'clock magnets need to have a pulling affect.
    The 7 + 1 o'clock magnets need to have a pushing effect.
Just something else for you to check,,,,

Why not buy a new Flywheel & Stator with new woodruff key.

The tecates have nothing but problems with these item's.... Ricky Stator has these parts.

Tb, check and see if your carburetor float is stuck. If it is, it can be getting fuel, but not quite enough fuel to fire, but it will backfire occasionally. Exactly the symptoms that you're experiencing. Try giving the carb a bunch of good solid taps with the handle-end of a screwdriver to unstick the float. It's frustrating, I know. Good luck!

Just send me a PM! You have to have the complete set (flywheel, stator, CDI) which I have, and it will fit on the 86! Im not sure what the problem is with your trike, so make sure this is what you need before spending any money that may not be necessary.....just looking out!

Not sure what PM stands for

I'm not sure either, but it can't hurt to replace all the electrical system. Just wanted to make sure it was for an 86 KXT 250 T3. Call me tomorrow at 985-320-4878 and we can talk it over.
    Thanks, Bryan

In speaking with Bryan there might be a slight difference in the 87/88 T-4 fly wheels. Just a slight difference in magnet placement.
And another site him and i hang on, in the Kawi forum a fella responded very confindently that the 87/88 T-4 uses a 3 pole magnatism (still 4 magnets) ,,,, not a clue how that works.
I am just gonna send him down one of my refurbished ones off a T-3 to see if its his problem.
Hopefully it is that simple for him.
