    1st gen 200x clutch questions

    Been doing a refurbish of my 200x and I'm at the ctutch. Got the old noisy engine with no third gear on the bench and a nice running engine installed in the trike. Both clutches out. Both are well within specs, both plates and springs.

    #1. The lock nut holding the clutch plates on in both engines were not tight. Not even close to what they should be torqued at. Common problem or previous installer error? Maybe put a little blue Loktite on first?

    #2. One of the clutch set ups, the metal plates in between the pressure plate has little dimple holes all over it and are a darker color. The springs are darker color. The other set up has smooth shiney plates. The springs are greenish orangish(I'm color defishant) and are a bit longer than the other set.
    Which should I use? I was planning on using the first mentioned set up because it worked well. But the second mentioned set measures up a little better to spec.

    Well...I'll start...others will chime in if I'm wrong or if I missed something....

    #1..I would guess that someone didn't tighten the lock nut. The FSM says nothing about threadlocker. I would think that centrifugal force would keep it from working loose once torqued properly.

    #2...I would use the clutch set with the best overall condition(keeping the sets together...maybe it's OK to interchange...but I would keep clutch discs together with their original clutch plates). Check the plates for wear, the discs for warpage, and pick the best set overall. Then choose the best basket(clutch outer) and the best springs and put them all together.

    I'm not a mechanic, but this is what I would do. I have no info on the two different types of clutch plates. One of them may be after market and may be superior/inferior....I just don't know. Somebody here will know about that for sure.

    I guess I'll just torque the lock nut down and hope it stays.I agree that centrifugal force should keep it there

    I installed the clutch set with the shiney plates and greenish springs cause they measured up the best condition.

    Anyone know offhand the difference in the shiney and daerker, dimpled plates and the difference in spring colors? I don't have access to a spring pound pressure gauge. Thanks, Matt

    I put blue locktite on the crank nut and the clutch nut. The crank nut holds the oil spinner on. It doesn't hurt to have a bit of locktite on them threads, just an extra piece of mind.
