Need last minute advice before I spend $300 on new carb...

I have a 1984 YTM225DX. I have cleaned and taken the carb apart multiple times. Here is my problem.

-It will start first pull with the choke off. It will idle nice for about 10 seconds, then hesitate (like its not getting fuel) but go back to idle, then hesitate and then idle, and then stall.
-I then pull the choke up all the way and the rpm's will go way up (about 3000+rpm) so I turn out the idle screw with the choke still on and get the rpms to about 1500-1800rpm.
-The idle will then start to get lumpy (because its running rich with the choke on) so I turn off the choke and the rpms will jump again to about 3000rpm and then it will stall with the choke off.
-Running with the choke half on will cause the trike to stall.

I then can run the trike with the choke off, but I have to turn in the idle screw almost all the way to get it to idle with the choke off, but it will idle/hesitate/idle/hesitate. With the idle turned up so much, the rpms will hang (give throttle to 3000rpm and let off, the rpms will be slow to return to idle)

There is a brand new fuel petcock with good fuel flow. Clean tank, clean gas, clean carb.

The ONLY thing I have not adjusted is the float level, only because the carb was never touched before I took it apart...there-for it should not be out of adjustment I would assume. Perhaps I'm wrong...? (I hate adjusting floats as its a PITA to do)

Any advice would be appreciated. I really don't want to shell out $300 for a new carb, but this might be my only other option.

    Thanks,

You should always check your float level when you have the carb apart. Did you get your pilot set? Is your cable stretched? Fresh plug? Arent the YTMs prone to having bad fuel pumps? (I am a Honda guy) Have you checked for vacuum leaks?

I think I would check all those before I spiffed 300 for a different carb...
No trikes. Too old, too crippled. Unless I find one I can't live without!

to add to the stuff mentioned by thorp, Sounds more like an air-leak or bad seal in the intake tract...Make sure you getting a constant fuel flow too.On another note...a friends old 200s did something similar...and it was the timing chain jumping around..or bad valve springs if i remember right (was a few years ago)

    Thanks guys.

I will check the float level.

No fuel pump... I think you are thinking the kawasaki trikes.
My cam chain needs adjustment, what I will get done on Monday. I did not think that it could really have anything to do with it, but perhaps it does...?

Any other idea's, please pass them on.
    Thanks!

checked float level via the fuel level test. Its perfect.

I guess next on the list is to get the cam chain adjusted and see from there.

    Everything else checks out.

This is really stupid but, on my 200s before it stopped running all together would do the really high revs no idle thing and the gas cap vent wasn't operational.
If you can't fix it with a , its an electrical problem.

85 ATC 200s--Ratted out and not running at the moment

86 ATC 200x--All stock other than the handle bars

85 ATC 250es Big Red -- Just got new rubbers and she wants to ride!!

04 Suzuki LTZ250 quadsport - It was a decent price and I'm a raging idiot.
