My zig zag chains are the GREATEST thing I have done to my 316 so far! It rides so smooth that I forget they are on. And Ithink they might work better too since the tire is always on a chain and not between cross sections.

If you hate a bumpy ride DO THIS TO YOUR CHAINS!

Hey nice job on the restoration. I have a 1953 John Deere 60, and I've been working on it for quite some time. A few gears were all eaten up in the transmission, and there are many more small problems with it.

Looks nice. Them 316,318,400,420,317 were good tractors and will out last any of them made now. You really cant go wrong with one of them. The old attacments are pretty cool they had. The grader blades ad loader.

I painted some spare wheels today for my 316. The tires are VERY dry rotted but I want these for winter and they will have my chains on them all year round. I also made them into poor mans bead locks with the help of 16 sheet metal screws per wheel.

I decided to finally swap my 318 brakes over to the 316. My 316 just has 1 brake pedal and 318s have 2 so now I can lock up each rear tire separate from each other. I'll just post a link to a thread I started on the tractor site...took to long to post all that the first time...lol

i decided to put the original single spool hydraulic system back on the 316 in addition to the duel spool I put on in it's place.

Now I'll have 3 hydraulic levers which means now the deck will not be tied in with the blade. 1 lever for the deck, 1 for raising, lowering, and float for the blade, and 1 for power angle for the blade.

I just need to get some hoses made up and it's done.

Gotta love Old Deeres! New ones arent anything special, but the old ones are un-killable. I got my John Deere 70 out of a scrap heap, it had a "blown motor" A new battery, she fired right up. Didnt come with a deck, so I tool off the deck control levers, swapped some pulleys around, painted it and gave it a pipe! My grandpa has a few old JD lawn tractors. One even has power deck-lift. Awesome machines.

    Thanks guys!

I was never a tractor guy even though I used my 316 since it was new. The only reason Dad bought it (according to Mom) was that he was tired of my grand parents telling him to get a JD instead of the several throw away lawn mowers we had. We mowed like 7-8 aces at the time and went through cheap tractors all the time. When Dad gave it to me it was BEAT and just going through it to fix it up got me hooked into JD garden tractors. VERY handy to have around, saves me a ton of work every time I get it out.
