    23 patches later

I had the tube out for a slow leak repair, when the winds kicked up overnight and blew it 1/4 mile through the desert. After I found it, it had quite a bit more than one slow leak.

After 23 individual patches, it now doesn't bubble under water.

Wow. I'd like to say: why didn't you just buy a new one, but I would have probably done the same thing.

New tubes are almost $20. Patches are much less than that, and a bottle of slime is more expensive than the patches, and patching it brings satisfaction for some reason. I also patch the tubes in my streetbike, I would be keeping the japanese rubber company in business with all the stuff I run over.

I do this with the patches:

Find the leak while holding it underwater
Circle it with a crayon (Wish I had what the tire man uses)
Rough it up with the rougher upper really good
Use brake cleaner and a clean rag to clean the area
Apply the cement and rub it into the tube
    Stick the patch on
Never had one fail using this method.

No way! The new tire is tube-less. The back tires (I am using the good tire on the front for steering) are "holy" and I don't mean they go to church!

I was riding the ATC the other day when suddenly something very large punctured the tire. I was 3 miles out, on hard and treacherous terrain. The tire went flat in a few seconds. I had to limp it all the way back home, and when I arrived, the tire looked more like a pretzel than a tire. When I got it untangled, I ended up replacing two patches, and then had to put on two more patches to fix a pinch/rub hole and the original hole, and now it has 25 patches in total on this tube.

I noticed there were two tears now in the tire. So I endeavored to repair it.

    Tear

I went out and eventually found some rubber "stuff" to try to reinforce the crack from tearing further.

I believe it is some form of metal tank sealant. It has been in the sun but I believe it is OK.

Next, I bought some small smooth threaded rivet things.

And then cut the rubber and I also beveled the edges of the rubber to prevent chafing of the tube.

Then, I drilled holes for the rivets:

And removed material so the upper rivet can sit flat.

And installed the rivets and rubber on the inside. This is to prevent the tube from trying to pop out of the tear, and the rivets "try" the keep the sides together.

Although it seemed like a good idea at the time, I realize now that maybe not so much. I decided to put a patch of rubber on the other side, to really give me strength. While it might work alright, I run the risk of running over something that will wedge between the rubber and pop the head right off of the rivets. I may run bailing wire over each end to minimize this.

I also used blue Loctite on all the threaded rivets.

Here it is all together. So far, so good!

Just when i thought i had seen it all...a bias-ply/radial boot would have Fixed that tear just fine...Im not going to get into it anymore than that....Let us know how long it last before the rivets wear a hole in the tube.

LOL!!!!!! That's what I was thinking. You've got the kind of resourcefulness that would help you get off a deserted island, but I'm not sure the effort is worth in on that old tire. It looks dried up and ready for more splits.
