    Points Question '80 ATC110 w/pictures

Working on a 1980 ATC110. Already did the carburetor. Good to go there. Running a little dodgy. I'm checking the points and they look totally unlike any points I have ever seen before. They really don't look burnt, but they have "crosses" in them. They have a "male" raised cross shape on the one side and the mating "female" depression cross on the other side. I've only seen flat points in my lifetime. They almost look like they were made like that. I guess that's my question. Are they supposed to be like that or are they toast? And if they are toast, what in the world causes this "cross" type of deformation? Here's a picture. Thanks for any input. :

Thanks for the advice. I was planning on replacing the points from the get go. I guess I was just sort of getting at if I have some kind of ignition problem, like a bad condenser, that causes deformation like this????? Or some other part of the ignition circuit??? I've just never seen points with this cross shape in the surfaces before. Like I said, it almost looks like the crosses were deliberately made into the surfaces. I've never seen points without 100% flat surfaces, so just trying to find out if these are the way they're supposed to be or not. Can't tell from the manual because the pictures aren't close-up enough. I've searched through the forums, too, for other posts related to this (condition) if it is actually not normal. When I put another set of points in, I don't want the same recurrent problem when I could have actually fixed the cause.

I've seen them before with the X in them and their just an aftermarket set nothing special . OEM are prob the best if you get a set .

You mean like "maybe I'm going to get this thing running right, take it out on a wet, muddy trail, slide off the trail into a rut, and have the rut steer me into a big 'ole oak tree" kinda religious sign????? LOL. Gosh, sure hope not. I already went that route on my Z50 when I was kid and it wasn't no fun. Man, what's the odds of it happening twice to me in my lifetime? Now...................................I might be concerned if it had a "666" burned into the points surfaces. LOL

To Shortline10's reply: Thanks a lot. That's good info. I've never seen points like that. I'm going to just replace the points and condenser. Hopefully, with OEM, if I can find them. That's pretty weird that they would make them like that. Don't know what they're thinking. It's good info for anyone else ever doing any searching for keywords like points and cross or crosses. Thanks a lot.

I know man. I didn't take it that way. Just joking back. Whether I see cross or 666 or jimmy hoffa on my points surfaces, its all good fun. If I ever go off the trail into a tree, I KNOW its MY FAULT and not something caused by crosses or worse that I'm seeing on my points or anywhere else for that matter.

Does anyone know the Honda Part Number for the Condenser for the 1980 ATC110????? I called the Honda dealer and he couldn't find it anywhere in the schematic. I looked through a few online schematics and couldn't find it either. Google searches come up with nothing.

That maybe because the coil and condenser came as one unit.

Yep , your gonna have to buy the coil if you want to change the condensor , its all in one and hard wired .

Ah Hah!! Now I see the problem why I can't find a condenser. I think I'll just replace the points first and see what happens. I "suppose" I could "cut" the condenser off the coil and "extend the wire to a new condenser and mount the new one elsewhere or even just grind the rivets off the old condenser mount and reattach right on the coil? Possible? Probably been done before? Anyone know the specifics of the condenser? Like the uF size and all that? Probably any condenser off any smaller size trike (bike) would work, huh? Just a thought for possible future use. Thanks for the input fellas, 1979ATC110 and Shortline10. Appreciate it.
