    84 200x... wow im confused

so i bought a 84 200x... it didnt run... it has good spark compression and the timing is on... ive gone through the carb 3 times cleaning everything and blowing out the jets, every time resetting it to the specified settings in the manual. i can kick it a few times and it will start up and idle for 10 to 20 seconds... if u give it throttle nothing happens (other than it gets too much air and dies) It wont come off idle. i am really confused any ideas>?

Fuel air mixture screw! bad head gasket, weak compression, improper jetting/needle clip postion! try the fuel air mixture screw, do a compression test! every little thing counts just check the basics clogged fuel filter from the tank peice of rust or other!

sounds to be in carb... try running without the gas cap if its clogged it will not flow gas fast enough or none at all (creates a vaccum) . Did you clean the jets , make sure all the holes are open, use a piece of wire from a wire brush if you do not have a jet cleaner. on the slow (idle) jet there are small holes that run across the jet as well as through the jet. Is the float able to float? Take it out and shake it and listen for gas in the float or fill a cup of water and see if it floats.

check airbox lid and rubbers around it. If you can keep it running spray some carb cleaner or starting fluid on and around airbox area, intake boot, head gasket etc.... and see if it goes to high idle. If it does, you have a air leak somewhere. Rebuild kit for carb might not hurt.......just start new for 20-30 bucks and throw all the old stuff out......further ahead in the long run. Make sure fuel petcock flows well and is clean also. As Blue said above....fuelcap may be bad. My 200x did that same thing after a couple of minutes, vaporlocked, got new cap. Should be able to tell if you can blow through vent hose with little effort... goodluck

Is the plug new and gaped right? Their is a chance that the plug is fouled or even gaped wrong. If one of these is the case when you throttle up it just puts out the plug like water on fire. Also the clip on needle should be set on the second step from the bottom. Make sure the kill switch is working right to or that cause problems like that and check vavle clearence (0.003 gap).
