if you want a trike that will be fun to ride, easy to own and a overall good time then the 200x engine. if you want something that is a struggle to ride, hard to make, unbalanced, make you sore after 15 mins of riding, and lots of work to keep it up to par then the 450.
it depends where your riding. if your trailing or riding in someones back yard the 450 will get boring fast, but if your duning or riding with other fast machines the 450 would be sweet.
i have learned its not all about speed to have fun. i enjoy riding my 110 more than fast stuff alot of the time, depends where im at and who im with.
Would like to see 252 x motor built, dependability, cost, and preformance, and I'm not being arrogant, or demeaning. I wouldn't belittle someone because they jacked up a big red or built a yt flattracker, people have different preferences and challanges for the 3-wheelers they enjoy. But listen to the wise old trikers (ignore the negative), 200x is a 200x, mod the piss outta it, with engine schematics it was designed with. I'd like to see more pulled out of these sport bikes, honda didn't do justice with the 198cc four-stroke.
83' 200x (son's). 85' 200 auto-x & 85' 125m (daughters). 84' Tecate(?). 85' KXT Tecate (mine!, mine!, mine!.)+ some others but don't feel like typing them in.
Sounds like you pretty much have your mind made up on using the 450. Anytime somebody replied with a reason it wouldn't work you have an answer
Rob
If the kid has the mind skills & feels up to the challange that he can built the 450 & it's possible, I would say go for it!
