not 100% but it sounds like the problem i was having with my 200x... it would idle but not rev up and sometimes it would die... i found out the cam was rounded so i would check it... take off the cdi and the 4 12mm nuts and 4 alen screws and lift the valve cover up... feel the cam lobes... i know mine personally were so bad that there barely was a lobe... hope this helps

if the cams lifting the valve cover its prob not timed right and the valve clearnces are way off.

ok here goes for Mr_RPM my mystery tube runs from the airbox to frame got it secured today ,
Grizzlypeg and Autoxer , i have not verified the jets yet , are they numbered or labled somehow ? and it starts and idles 100% better with the new carb , the lug that aligned the carb slide was busted in the old one and the new carb was only 35$ shipped so i went for it.
today i adjusted the throttle cable ( twist throttle ) tightned the spark plug , oiled and used no toil filter rim grease on the new filter seems a little better already , maybe ill get lucky ? did i mention it sat for over a yr with gas in it ? maybe just " needs the cobs blown out " ? anyway gonna check the jets tonight maybe use the rebuild kit i got maybe i just need to break down and start shopping for a 350X or 250R for the power i want lol! my 200X still seems a little slugish in high r's

the jets have a number right on them indicating the size. if oiling the filter helped then you probably are running lean.
-
if its just running lean then jets, right ? ill check them tomorrow morning or tonight thanks for all the input yall

Lean mixture could be caused by a number of things. Some I can think of: 1)air leaks between carb and engine 2) fuel supply problem 3) low float level 4)plugged carb passages 5)incorrect jets or adjustment. I would try to make sure I've eliminated 1-4 before experimenting with jets. It wouldn't hurt to compare the factory carb's jets with the one's on the replacement carb to make sure they are same or close.

it could be the jets yes, but it could be a few things. running lean means your getting to much air or not enough gas. an air leak would allow excess air in and therefore causing it to run lean. or too small of a jet wouldn't allow enough gas in the engine and cause it to run lean. there are alot of things to cause it to run lean
-
thanks again guys im gonna check for leaks first .i put an inline filter on as well and fuel flow is good from petcock, im leaning towards air leaks around old beat up header or jets oh it seems to run excessively hot and gets real hot quick does this help at all or do they typically run hot being air cooled ?
-
lean machines tend to run hot, and it depends on what your doing, aircooled machines need the movement of air over the fins, so if your just going slow in tight trails and such it will get hot.
-
cool i havent put the new tank fins on cuz the tank is in pretty rough shape , hence the name im waitin to hear back from local dealer on a new tank same as my seat i cant in good concious put a new seat on a duct taped busted up fender and new fins on an old dented up tank
-
i mean the air fins on the cylinder of the engine, the gas-tank fins are cosmetic mainly on the 200x and wont effect temp much if at all.
-
I suppose if you were doing a lot of fiddling with it idling, you could alway plug in a big fan and put it in front of the engine.
Just keep at it, and you'll find the problem. Longer it takes, the more you will have learned.

hahahhaha ill try the fan lol ! acttually didnt do too much when idling just set the pilot screw and idle which was a snap thanks to this site , owners and service manuals , so i shouldnt worry about the heat , i know i need some washers or spacers or something , my fender has melted where it sits over the pipe. thats prob a whole 'nother can o worms ?
