My 86 200x is smoking and i want to try to replace the valve seals to see if that is the problem. Can I just unbolt the head and replace the seals? Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You need a valve spring compressor for it.
I bought new valves and seals for my 200x. The Machine shop cleaned and rebuilt the head before I even got home. They charged me $30. Honestly it was cheaper then it was to buy the tool.
So you just took the head off then? Do you have to mess with the timing chain when you take the head off? Did it stop yours from smoking?

yes you have to loosed the timing chain, take the cam out normaly or take the sprocket off it. im having a check into seals and guides on my xr200 cuz it smoked after a new top end. i was just too bussy to rip it appart again.
How would i loosen the chain? Is it easy to see how once i get the head loose? Then when i put it back together I just tighten it back up to where it was? So to replace the seals all i need are the new seals and a new head gasket, right?

you go to the, you need all new gaskets if you take it appart. go to world class help and down load the 200x manual...if not go buy one. this is right where everyone starts to mess up machines. wanting to take the cheap way out and not us anything to follow by and in the end you end up paying double.
you got alot to learn shorty my friend so look at the manual
Shorty??? Yes, Ive never tore into a 4 stroke atc/atv motor, just 2 strokes. I was asking for advice before I did it. I want to look at it soon, not in a week when the manual comes in the mail. And yes im hoping that the new seals will fix the smoking, if it doesnt i guess then ill do bore, piston, and rings.

i would do it all at once, why take the chance and waste the down time 2 times to rip it appart. your gonna be so close to pulling the cylinder off it wont even be funny cuz your gonna need.
what kinda smoke, what color, black is too rich, blue is buring oil. and i ment shortly, not shorty sorry
Its blue smoke. It seems to smoke alot more after its been warmed up. It starts in 2 kicks and seems to have good power. But it smokes quite a bit just sitting there idling, so it probably is the piston and rings.

sounds like it. pull the cylinder off once ya take the head off, it wont take but an extra 30 seconds, let someone inspect it and tell ya want ya need.
Does the engine have to come all the way off the bike to do this? Thanks for the help.

You can download it and print it right away.
PLEASE ask for a free manual before something gets ruined. Valve seals are not a "Rookie" job and if the seals are bad, then the guides might be sloppy, the valves leaking and in need of re-cutting and or lapping and the piston and rings might need to be changed along with the bore size.... Also the timing chain and guides and on and on. If you want a reliable Honda you have to bring it back to factory specs as close to as well as they did 25 yrs ago, thats why they last so long even when low on oil and barely maintained. But, you can't be cheap with a rebuild and it's usually never just a few parts. By the time we get them they are still near bone stock and need help........
The 86/87 motor cam sprocket does not unbolt, it is welded on. If you don't read up on this and "wing it" even something simple such as the camshaft cap being a bit overtightened can ruin the motor in time. MonroeMike can hook you up with a free online manual. Take a crap and read the book, that along with help on 3WW spells SUCCESS!!

All our government does is distract us while they steal from us, misspend our tax $ and ruin our country
Couldn't have said it any better then DC just download the free manual or have someone else do it if your worried about dont be afraid to ask around for how much it costs! remember everybody needs work right now!
He's got a good point, if you can get it done cheap, the 86 200X is a rare bird. It would be bad to mess something up on it. But if you read the manual a few times over before starting and pay attention to the steps you should be good. The first time I pulled a motor apart I read the service manual at least 4 times over. Took a twin cam 4 cylinder apart one night and got it all back together the next day. Would have had it back together the same night but whoever had it apart before me left out one of the alignment pins for the head. Its really about being prepared and patient.
