84 200x wont start

picked this baby up for 300 the guy said it had spark was getting gas but wouldnt fire got home shot some ether in the clylinder nothing well i came up with the timing is off it will kick over fine very good compression but if i hold the throttle down and kick it sh*t.... it has a crap load of kickback i pushed it and dumped the clutch and it backfired out of the carb so i know the timing is off but i tried setting it but still the same result ive been hearing of this 180 degrees problem but not sure on how to fix it i will get pics in about 10 minutes any help would be great thanks guys

This is usually caused by the outer spark timing housing slipping from the inner housing. The inner housing is keyed on the the end of the crankshaft but the outer housing is pressed over a rubber vibration damper/insulator and after a few years the rubber deteriorates an allows the outer housing to 'slip' and go out of time.
