Aftermarket carb on 86 Tri-Z????

I put some Boyesen reeds on my Tri-Z today and figured while I had it apart id take the carb apart, clean it, and at least make sure it has the stock 320 jet in it. Well it has a 190 main jet and a 62 pilot jet. Its a Keihin "PJ" carb. You adjust the idle with the choke knob. What is this carb off from? And is it better than the 86 Tri-Z carb? Are the jets in it now the right ones? Stock besides Phase Five silencer, UNI filter, and Boyesen reeds. Thanks.

Yes its better than the Z carb but better yet would be the PWK carb.

do you know if the jetting is at least close to what it should be? bike runs good, starts one kick, revs out real fast.

Ive looked around and I think it may be a stock 1986 250r carb on my Tri-Z. It is a flatside and the 85 250r didnt have the flatside. The stock jetting for an 86 250r is a 160 from what ive read, but mine has a 190 in it. Since it came off a different bike would that jetting be correct? Is this alot better carb than the stocker?

The Tri-Z likes alot of fuel so you may be close. If you want to check your jetting do a pipe or plug check. The pipe check is more accurate but alittle more time consuming to do. Just find a place you can do a nice 3rd gear roll on to wide open once the engine is to running temp. Soon as its wide open and reved all the way out chop the throttle pull in the clutch and kill the engine. Pull out the plug and it should be coco brown, more black to rich more white to lean. I can exlplain the pipe check if you want to know just ask.

Did a plug check with a brand new plug. Looked a nice brown color. Not white and not black. Im going to leave it the way it is.

Right on, you can always raise or lower you needle to fine tune it if your close.

Racerguy381, thanks for your help. So, if I ever need parts for this carb, does it sound like a carb from an 86 250R?

ya most likely it is a PJ if it has a oval slide. All the PJ oval and PWK carbs take the same needles and jets.

if the needle say's 1468 it's from the "85" .. if it say's 1470-1471 it's from the 88-89 TRX .. Back in "86" i ran the "86" oval with the 160 main..SAY IT !!

This carb is a flatslide. It says PJ on it.
