    Best gearing for 86 Tri-Z?

Stock is 13/44. Right now it is 12/44 with 22x12.5x9 tires on it. Within the next few weeks ill be getting new tires in the stock 21x11x9 size. Wondering if anyone knows what size gears I should go with. It tops out too fast right now. I was thinking maybe 13/42? Any suggestions?

By going back to 13, you would increase the top speed, from where it is currently, but the by going to the 42 tooth rear, (instead of the 44) you will also be increasing the top speed... Thats a pretty dramatic gear change... When I was resprocketing my rocket, I dropped on tooth in the front, and 2 teeth in the rear, helps with the low end, buit doesnt rob the top end either... Gearing is really a personal taste... What conditions are you normally riding?

I have an 85 and I'm going to try 13/43 and see how that goes. The 12/44 will give you too much low end and you'll top out too quick. If you already have the 13/44 gears, then I would try them out and then go from there. I don't have the 6 speed, so I can't say for sure what would be the best combo for you. Hope this helps.

I ride mostly in fields and in the woods. The 12/44 I have on there now tops out wayyy too fast for me. Maybe ill just try the stock 13/44 with the stock size tires or a 13/43. Anyone else? Thanks for the replies. I love this site. I used to be on LS1TECH.COM all the time because I have an 02 Z28, but now my three wheeler has top priority.

I run oem gearing on my 6speed Z. It's a great set up that works well for any type of riding. 6th gear cruising is very comfortable, and top speed is impressive. Low end is not an issue for any type of slow speed either. The 6speed adds a lot of dimension to the Tri-z's torquey engine. Going too deep with final drive ratios will result in shifting the rev range too high for the engines strong point."AKA" Strong and smooth low to mid power. I don't know your mods if any, and am speaking from personal experience with my all stock 86.

Would I be OK with 13/43 with the stock 21x11x9 tires? Only mods are bigger carb, uni filter, boyesen reeds, and phase five silencer.
