I know you are not trying to argue with me. I also know you weren't the original starter of this thread. But I've seen so many postings of this very thing and it seems most are started by people who just don't know. There were tons of people who wrote thier state and national representatives on this issue. People who lived or live in states that register their recreational vehicles pay a portion to help maintain and preserve the areas for these rvs or atvs or what ever you would like to call them. Money from car and truck and motorcycle tags go towards highway maintenance. Most states have a motorcycle safety program that is partially funded from motorcycle tags. At times there have been states that were threatened to lose part of their highway funding if they didn't adopt motorcycle helmet laws. Some states have shut down and sold off recreational areas that alot of "citizens" taxes have paid for. When the early hondas were around, alot of people weren't wearing helmets. There were no classes on safety or how to ride. There weren't any mandatory helmet laws for kids on bicycles even. We survived. My parents even encouraged me to go out and play in traffic! LOL I was talking to a board member last week. I know for a fact that honda sent out decals and safety pamphlets to alot of people that had previously bought trikes as part of a safety awareness campaign that the US government forced upon the trike makers. I have a letter and envelope and all the stickers and pamphlets at home somewhere for a one owner trike that I have. My old atc90 was too old to be covered by the campaign, but I think all trikes that honda sold from 80 or 81 on had to be contacted and mailed the materials. Most people probably threw them out. For responsible people, these things aren't a problem. But for those irresponsible people who blame everyone but themselves, well, those are really the people who you need to thank. There were and are tons of people that give politicians the ammo to do all the stupid stuff they do. And all it takes is for one politician that think that they are doing the best for the average citizen and then it just snowballs from there. There were people passionate about thier trikes back then as they are now. But the big trike makers and honda especially, that had a big influence on the AMA which pretty stopped trikes from being raced, which also helped with quad sales. It hurt the little guys more than anything. And the aftermarket, it just made them stronger too. Since alot of people had to turn to aftermarket parts to keep their trikes going. But racers had to go to quads. And that is why quad kits for trikes came about. Those ugly kits kept the average trike racer going. Not eveyone can afford to just go out and buy a new or several new machines. So they made do for the cheapest cost. That's why I get pissed about the idiots who talk about the astro kits and stuff being an abomination to trikes. They just once again show what they don't know. The government or a very small part of the government was threatening to step in. Sort of like Tipper Gore and the music nazis with the whole illicit lyrics deal. People were just being stupidly irresponsible. But the real writing was on the wall. Quads were on thier way in. Honda had made their money and they were the only real trikes for 10 years and they were just getting real competition in the trike market. I mean the yt125 in 1980 from yamaha and not from kawasaki until 83 or 84. If forced Honda to ramp up thier quad development. And again they stepped up the game. Hence the trx250r.
