    Question Need Help - USA to Canada Shipping Honda ATC , Need info ? ? ?

    I just recently Sold my 1986 ATC 350X to a Buyer in Canada.

    He's having trouble with conflicting answer's what needs to be done in order to cross the Border.

    He will be Picking it up in ( US State ~ North Dakota )

    What fourms does he need or what needs to be done .


    I have a Title for the ATC ( I can sign it over to him ) and can give him a bill of sale .

    The problem is Crossing it over from US to Canada.

    Please Post if you have managed to Cross a 3 wheeler over and Know what need's to be done.

    http://vehicleimportation.ca/ Appears that they are different. Not sure how honda would be to deal with as far as getting a letter from them stating that all recalls have been done but I know ppl contact them from time to time with good results so it seems dooable and worthwhile

    He should call Canada Customs and try to speak to someone there. Find out what paperwork he needs. Is it coming in through Pembina? Might be best to talk to them.

    Don't get anyone else involved, just find out how he does it and I believe he does it so easily. It may have something to do with where you cross or removing some parts, I'm not sure but I'm sure he'll chime in if he's around.......

    Contact KINTORE and ask him, he goes back and forth 20 times a year for OTC series, Smith road (might be OTC series anyhow, IDK) I believe and definitely Trikefest!!

    As mentioned by Tapper, any and all trikes can be imported into Canada. RIV (registrar of Imported Vehicles, http://www.riv.ca/ImportingAVehicle.aspx) states in section 9 , restricted use motorcycles, that any three wheeled ATV "LESS" than 15 yrs old is not allowed. As we all know, there have been no three wheelers made in the last 20 years so by default all the machines we are talking about are permissible. Sort of a typical Government double speak thing.
    When I brought the three R's back I had a border guy say I couldn't bring them in, I asked him to re-read the RIV list and break it down and he did agree that machines over 15 yrs old are allowed in.

    Excellent use of the search feature....
    With a signed title it is very easy. When you pull up to the booth tell the customs agent you have an ATV to declare and need to go in and do the paperwork. once inside you will need the title and the bill of sale, this is where you may get the (you can't import those) BS, again, have them read the RIV Section 9 as above. They can be imported. The paperwork you get at the border is an import form (#1 I think), you will get the yellow copy, pay the GST on the receipt value and be on your way. In Ontario when you go to the Ministry of Transportation to get the ownership (our version of the title) They will look at the title and bill of sale to make sure it was purchased legally and the import form1 will tell them it was imported properly and can be entered into the system.

    Great advice Ross, that sums it up perfectly.

    One small addition - definitely contact the particular border crossing you will be passing through and find out if anything else is required. Some crosssigs (I can name two a least) require you to fax them the title 72 hours in advance of you crossing the border so they can perform a VIN search.

    Be sure to save a copy of the fax confirmation sheet and bring this with you. If they can't find your fax, this is proof that you sent it 72 hours in advance.

    That is true but the fax goes to the US side of the border you are crossing, at least 72 hrs in advance. This is to make sure the title is clear and free of liens.
    On a side note, I have never presented US customs with a title for any of my machines, probably should have, it is the law.

    He's wrong. This is a Canada wide program and all border crossings to the states are listed in the second link. All this does is get it into the country, each province will have it's own licensing / ownership deal but the import is all the same.

    (this is the double speak lawyers area, as you can see it says vehicles less than 15 yrs old are Inadmissible, meaning not allowed. All our three wheelers are OVER 15yrs old, therefore Admissible,or allowed)
    I did have to have the customs guy re-read the statement before he admitted I was right and you never know, you may get that super asshole, power tripping, customs agent, who just gets pissed off when you know more about his job than he does, shut the door on you.
    Again this is only from my experience, by no way am I an import expert. Tapper 190 has brought a few trikes back from the States the same way with no problem, The big bonus is you have the title, makes it much esier.

    It would be easiest if the person on title transports it over the border. Then sign the title over once in Canada. A nice and easy way to do it with no hassle.

    Doesn't work if you want to get an ownership(our version of a title). You must have the Customs Form 1 filled out from the border crossing. In Ontario if you ride anywhere but your own property or a off road track you will need an ownership for the machine at some time. If you have the title it is so easy.

    Hopefully this is put to rest now, I just wanted to say that I just brought over a 250sx with out any problems. I did not have to take anything apart. The custom officer did want me to take the month and year off the name plate because he was looking at a 125m in the box of my truck. I had to prove that the trikes from the United States only has the vin # stamped in the neck and doesn't have the plate rivet on as well. The form is called a vehicle import form #1 (I have it sitting in front of me) As long as the three wheeler in 15 years and older, it can be brought over.
