200x low generator voltage

My headlight and taillight are very dim on my 84 200x. I removed the tail light from the wiring and measured the voltage as only 5 volts. I then unplugged the headlight and it jumped up to 6 volts. I then measured the voltage at the headlight and its also only 6 volts (high or low beam). It will light up the headlight, so its putting out some current at 5 volts, but not proper voltage. The wiring diagram looks pretty simple for the stator coil, its just a coil, grounded at one end and putting out 12v ac at the other. If I had to guess, I'd say the coil has shorted to the laminate core somewhere along its length and now is only half lenght active.

Anyone have a stator coil go on them? Did it simply put out reduced voltage like I'm experiencing?

Wondering that myself. I also see one on ebay from Canada (free shipping for me) that is $39 cdn. They quote the resistance is 150 ohms. Maybe I'll get back outside and see what it measures at. If its either way high or low, that should tell me its shot. Could always be some bad connection in the wiring, so I'll see if I can measure the output voltage right off the yellow wire coming out of the case. Hate to find out how much needs to be pulled apart to get at the coil. Maybe easy, maybe not (flywheel over top of it??).

Ck grounds. Unloaded systems, no bulbs etc will give readings that vary. Most often resistance cks will spin ya in circles, especially reg/rec & voltage regulators. Compare to a KNOWN good unit- same wires - other tryke output. Swap with known good stator and ride.

Exciter coil- The exciter coil is normal if there is continuity between the black/red wire and body ground.
Resistance: 100-400 ohms

I had a problem like this with my '85 x. I bought the Rickey Stator unit & had better results. The problem is...'as rickey said' the coil can't really be souped up a whole lot...there just isn't enough room to build it up. So, get the improved lighting coil from him & be happy

The yellow wire tests out as continuity to ground. The ground wire (green) on the harness also has good ground. Probably something wrong with that stator having shorted windings. Might as well replace it.

the 200x is pretty easy to replace as the fly wheel doesn't have to be pulled

those voltages cannot be measured with a voltmeter, so dont believe the 5-6 volt readings. MUST use an oscillocsope. Usually bad wiring connectors.

The front bulb sure lights up like its only getting 5-6 volts. Which connections should I look at? I'm guessing it would have to be internal to the side cover.

I could hook it up to a scope, but considering it doesn't light up the headlight very brightly, there is definately something amiss.

Changed the stator today, using a Ricky Stator 75W unit. Beautiful bright white light from the headlight, even at idle. Nice easy repair.
