    When stator goes out-

    What does it do/feel like. Does it die a few times, then finally nothing? Riding 85' Tecate and it was dying while riding, didn't matter for 5 minutes or 1 hour, felt/sounded like it bogged down or flooded out, then just quit. Never started again. No spark. Changed ignition coil with spare, nothin'. Electrical has been the hardest thing on me, so this is not good.

    Mine started bogging like it was flooding and then stalling one day. It would start immediately after stall and go for a couple minutes, then repeat. If I let it cool off it would ride longer, then start again. I made the best of it that day and put the bike up for the season. Tried to start it in the winter and spring and nothing but backfires, it sparked a little.

    I put a KX ignition system on and it fired right up.

    nd4speed- What do you mean by 'KX ignition system', cdi box and ignition coil? Or new stator & flywheel? Are they accessable? Was it expensive? And the wiring was pretty hacked up, but like I said, worked (new plug too). I really was lovin' this 2-stroke, but has been pretty frustrating, didn't buy it to tinker, want to ride it. Thanks for replying guys, no spark at all- shucks.

    The KX ignition system is the cdi, coil, stator, and flywheel. The flywheel is smaller so it will rev faster. The problem is that it doesn't have a lighting coil. So no lights. Tecate50 I think had a set for sale a while back. I have never had a stator go bad (knock on wood) so I don't know what it is like. I think I got the only rickystator stator and flywheel that were any good.

    1979 ATC110 (Bandito frame and forks, Turbo wheels, disc braked)
    1982 ATC70 (Lifan manual 125)
    1987 LT80 (piped, widened)

    One could make a lot of more modern ignition systems work with some modifications and a degree wheel. KX500 hill climbers have used KX125 systems on their bikes!!! So a KX500, KX250, KX125 system would all work, but one would want to use a CDI for a 250 to match RPM limits.

    My KX250 system was from 1986.

    By "ignition coil" you mean the secondary coil that has the plug wire and cap attached?

    Not fair dcreel & to think that I was actually starting to like you (lol), nd4speed- Yup, I meant secondary. O.k., once again you gentlemen have calmed me down and I think I could do this in a reasonable price range. We have a bike bone yard that may have a cdi. I also have a spare stator in my box of extra's, don't know if it's any good however, is there any tricks lining up anything I should be forewarned about? (my owners manual sucks) Kawasaki engineering is great in my book and makes everything accessable and reasonable (mabee too simple, hence reliability?). Jus' want to ride this trike some more is all. curtis- thanks bud, Montana has no trike mechanics, so the only help I'll get is from you gentlemen and with these two hands.

    you can buy stator coils and just mount them and solder the wires, it's the cheapest way to go.

    You can ohm test the stator

    Yes, nd4speed is correct, by far the most inexpensive way to go is to purchase the ignition coils and solder them in your self.
    That is, if ignition coils are at fault,,,, (most likely IMO)
    The 85 Tecate I bought last month had no spark at all and testing proved to be the ignition coils at fault.
    Ebay, 38-39 bucks shipped and a little bench time and I have wonderful spark.
    Since yours is intermittent, I would tend to think simply checking them with a multi meter (set @ 10K) might not be 100% accurate but you will eliminate, for the most part, any problem with that part of the ignition circuit.
    Do you have or have access to a simple multi meter tester ???
    I have had sevral coils (spark plug wire attached) act like what you are describing.

    you should get a reading around 180 omhs. if your off its no good. sometimes you will get a good reading and it still wont work. if that happens test it as soon as it quits.

    Not true. I have had no issues whatsoever with my Ricky flywheel/stator. I have heard of all the other guys having issues with them though.

    Sounds very much like you have an issue with the stator to me.

    For Tecate owners: http://www.3wheelerworld.com/showthr...ap-Interchange

    Acording to my research these are the same as all KXT250:

    New Moose Electrex Ignition Source and Pulser Coils (set of 2) that will fit:

    * 81-88 KX80, KX100, KX250
    * 86-89 KX500
    * 90-91 YZ125
    * Set of coils that replaces original set of coils on base plate.

    Item # M6882002M0945

    RM Stator Inc also states these are the same as above:

    Yamaha YZ80 ignition stator coils, 85-00
    Part # *RMRSC11/51

    84 T3

    Thank you so much nd4speed, that's exactly what I was wondering. I poured through that thread, am happy you pointed that detailed info out. There is alot of info there and confusing. Tried to look up matches on e-bay & denniskirk to see the final price, application, and part #'s. And mechanical hands on experience to do the job, as I stated, electrical has always been a weak point on anything I've worked on. Instead of soldering I'll let the Tecate be down & get a full $125 set up. Also looked for a wiring harness to replace mine, but can do a better job myself tapping into main controls, packing w/wire grease, & wrapping tightly with different color electical tape. My harness is hacked up and a bit short. Now I jus' hafta let it sit for a couple of monthes till' cash flow is better. Having a runnin $400 Tecate, I guess, isn't a reality.

    when coils fail, they just fail, the dont fart around about it. More likely a stator connector. What most dont realize is that they arent changing a bad stator, they are changing the stator AND the connector, and the connector is the fault. Cut the connector out and twist teh wires, see what happens
