You have to take every bit of tension off the brake arm. In fact I would recommend taking the adjustment nut all the way off the rear bar and pulling the lever and that little barrel with the hole in it totally off the rear brake lever if you can. If you have to remove the rear brake pedal to do it, then so be it. What happens is the brakes often wear a lip into the outer edge of the inside of the rear brake drum and then they won't clear the lip until you pull every last little bit of break tension off the brake shoes. Then it should just slide right off. I hope that makes sense?

i had that problem with my sx, had to remove the axle completely and took it to work and pressed it out. YEARS of dirt, rust, and assorted grime can form a bond to rival super glue. FYI be careful whaling on the drum, it's cast and can crack rather easily.
