tri-moto 125 problems

i bought a 1985 yamaha tri-moto 125 last week, it came with an 84 for parts. paid $300 for it all. i rode it exactly 2 laps around the yard. everything seemed fine, no complaints. (other than i turned it off and fuel started spilling out the overflow tube) it hasn't done that since. i got some spectro 10w30 to replace the transmission fluid, i did exactly as the owners manual said. didn't run it before changing, but drained and filled .8 qt in it. now, the problem is it runs, but when i put it in gear, it dies. i let it sit overnight, it started first pull this morning, let it run for a couple minutes, put it in gear, this time giving it more gas, and it went 5 feet and died. if i try to start it again, it's very hard to get running, and normally smokes more, and runs for a couple seconds and dies. i would really love to get it working again, otherwise i hope i can sell it for what i paid.

Try giving the carburetor a good cleaning, using carb cleaner and compressed air. Also install a new spark plug, and inline fuel filter. Good luck!

could the previous owner had a different oil in it? it ran fine, before i changed the oil. i'll try 10w40

Check/clean the carb. Is the gas good and fresh? New plug. If fuel was coming out of the overflow tube you have a carb issue. They are great trikes.

as soon as i got it i put a new plug and fresh gas in it, i changed the oil last night with penzoil 10w40, (non-synthetic), this morning i went to fire it up again, started first pull (no choke), went to ride it, rode it for maybe 50 feet before it died. after it dies, if i try to start it again, it isn't easy and it runs like crap (idles), smokes, and dies. that's why i think it's the carb now. i'll try a few more things, it may make it's way back on craigslist. hopefully i can get my $300 back...

update: i took the screw off the oil pump, (used for bleeding) and followed the procedure in the owners manual. this white gunky crap came out. maybe water? i sucked all the old oil and filled it with brand new yamalube 2 cycle oil, the bike moves now! i used a shot of starting fluid to get it started, because it wasn't as easy... but it ran!

I would block off that oil injection system and run premix. I cant trust a 25 year old pump....
