Ugh, decisions! 2 Big Reds (82-84) that dont run for 350 or a Yamaha YTM225 for 400+

I am thinking about buying 2 big reds for 300-350 as I posted in another thread but now I found a YTM225 that runs fine with shaft drive (not sure about reverse) for 400+.

    Which would you choose?

Are the YTM225s decent fun machines or are they rather weak?

i would take the yamaha as long as it runs good ie starts easy and idles good ... you are gaining shaft drive, better headlight and suspension

they are both good machines but if the yamaha needs parts they are super expensive honda is cheap and reliable with a lot of oem parts left it all falls down on what are you going to be using them for if you wanna go on a race bike or a donkey personally id go with big reds becuase hondas look better and have a bigger value restored if you can find a yammi 200e buy it they are the best bikes i have ever ridin

I would personally go with the 225dx. They are a very reliable machine, and has suspension. The suspension is the "get it" for me. It makes a much smoother ride with a shock in the rear. The suspension is by no means meant for jumping, but for trails it works great. I agree that the Honda models are easier to find parts for, and the motors are a little better built, but finding parts for the yamaha are not at all impossible, and maintanance isnt bad either. Many parts from other yamaha 200 models interchange as well. For what it is and cost, you should just about be able to pick up a Honda 200x for that price. That would have both choices beat, in suspension and power. Best trail bike ever. Good luck!

Well I looked at the YTM225 DX tonight. It starts up great using the electric start or the pull starter. All the plastics are there and look great except for one 2 inch crack which is sad but I'm not going to be super picky.

The engine sounded great and driving it felt good.

I don't think that the Hondas are Big Reds afterall, neither of them had Hi/Low transfer cases and the exhaust exited in the middle of the trike rather than out the side like on my 82 Big Red.

I'm not going to be jumping anything, i just want to have fun. I don't beat on my toys or I try not to anyway.

The nice thing about the Yamaha is that its an one owner trike, the woman's father bought it new in 85. Has the title, owners manual and even the full factory service manual, the tool kit under the seat, and a cool rack on the back of the trike, and a hitch.
