86 250R throttle cable

Anyone know how you're supposed to make an aftermarket throttle cable work on an 86 250R? Tried to change it last night, cables are identical, but can't figure out how you get the carb cap off of the old cable, and no clue how you would ever get it on the new one.

From the schematic on BikeBandit, looks like it comes from Honda as a complete assembly - looks like I'll be ordering from my dealer and missing another week of riding :evil:

You unsrew the cap from the carb, look up the slide, there's a c-clip up in the slide. get a pair of long needle nose pleirs to take that out and you should be able to figure it out from there.

The problem is actually getting the cap off of the cable - it seems to be attached from the factory - I did talk to my local dealer, and yes - it is sold as a complete assembly from Honda.

Don't you just love aftermarket parts!!! It is so nice that they list parts that don't fit the bikes they are for.... and you get to spend hours trying to make them work! s!

Hmm, I know motion pro sells a twist throttle setup thats complete for 30 bucks, but I thought the cap just popped off.

I'm not certain, but you may be thinking of the older R's with Mikuni carbs - The 86's had Kehin flat slides - the cable just pops out of the top of the slide.

well i have a 83 i just took the throttle off and it was like the first guy said unscrew the cap undo the clip inside compress the spring and you should see the end tab push then take it out of the gap on the side of it, thats all i had to do but i don't know if the 83 and 86 are the same or not

I have an 86 TRX250r which Im sure has the same cable as the 86 ATC. The carb cap for the stock Keihen carb is part of the throttle cable, and it is attached in the manufacturing process, and does not come off without some cutting and grinding.
