honda 125m transmission

I searched and couldn't find any specific info on this transmission. I'm interested in this unit for a project I'm doing, but the info i can find is scarce. I need to know if it's a seperate lo-range, or if it's just a low first gear, I've heard both, so I am not sure. What are the gear ratios, first through 5th, and reverse. Apporox weight? Is this tranmission offered in any other atc's? From the info I'm asking, can you recommend any other type of tranmission that would suite my needs(5spd, reverse, low range) Any other cool info? It depends on the year of the 125m, If its a 1984 it has a high and low range, giving 8 gears but no reverse. If it is 1985 or later it has five gears with a low first and reverse. Sorry I don't know the ratios.

Your close but not quite right.

1984 - 1985 has the Hi/Lo
1986-1987 Just has a lower first gear.

Hey guys, thanks for the info. I'm more interested with something like the pre 85's with a hi lo box, but with a reverse as well. I do like the granny first, but it depends how low it is. Any known trannies that fit this?

What about a big red tranny? Is that any different from the 125, if so what is? Thanks again. _nicko_

What do you need the engine for? You could always gear it down by changing the sprocket size. You can go to the 3 wheeler world home page and then click on the link on the right for the specifications page, there it will tell you what the difference is between all the trikes.

yes, I just found the 3 wheel world home page right before coming here again. I found the tranny needed. A 1984 Honda ATC200ES Big red. It's an auto 5 spd, dual range, with reverse! I'm so happy that what I wanted is actually made.

I am actually making a buggy for a competition which requires a low range for a sled pull, and the high gearing for top speed, yes we do need it ALL, no compromises. The reverse is necessary in case we crash into a tree..... Don't have to waste time getting out and pulling it away. Thanks for the help...all I could use now are ratios....I'm still pretty interested in that granny 1st gear though tranny though...it will save a few lbs. without the dual range stuffed in there. anyone? thanks so far for the help. _nicko_

yes, I just found the 3 wheel world home page right before coming here again. I found the tranny needed. A 1984 Honda ATC200ES Big red. It's an auto 5 spd, dual range, with reverse! I'm so happy that what I wanted is actually made.

Just so you know the 84 200es is shaft drive. I have a 88 trx125 that uses the same motor as the 86-87 125m. This 125 is no light wieght. We use it to pull a 16' car trailer around. The trailer wieghs about 1600lbs. I would say the top speed of the quad is about 35-40 also. And yes it does have reverse.

shaft drive is fine, not a problem to fab something up for it.

I NEED that granny gear first ratio,a dn everyhting else if possible...and is 5th an overdrive? This sounds great for what we want. By "no light weight", do you mean it's heavy, or just powerful? From what you say you can pull, it sounds great for our purpose there, but we are building from scratch and gear ratios really help out selection process for the rest of the car easier. 40 mph in this race is definitely enough, faster is better...we are running at a top end of 3600RPMs off a briggs and stratton 10hp motor. Is there anyone I can be directed to that is a huge ATC buff? Thanks again. _nicko_

What I mean by no light wieght is it pulls almost everything we try to pull with it.
Also, The motor is lighter than a 200es would be. I would say by 20-30 lbs. The 125m motor can be modified rather easily with a 200x head and cam. Or take it further and use a complete 83-85 200x top end. It takes a little more work but the power will be there. gearing can be changed easily by just changing sprockets.

Also, a sproket change will change an overall ratio, not give the low ratio we need, plus the high ratio for speed...it will help one, and decrease performance in another. , but you are right, gearing CAN be changed by just a sproket, just not the change we need. _nicko_

do you relize you are making a lot of work for yourself to have a less reliable, lower horsepower, american motor, fabricated to a japenese trannsmission???

it seems like a lot of fabricating work for no aparent advantage.

motorcycle/atv motors are a intrigle part of the trannsmission.
not like the seperate units used by B&S or Harley Davidson

yeah I know... It's trial and error at first. It's a cheap tranny to get, and will not take TOO much work to get it to work. I guess I should state....this is a competition. Rules are set that we MUST use this specific 10 hp engine. So we have to use what we can find, and modify it.

What you said was something I am looking for, not asking for it. Tell me if I'm not making any sense in my ideas.

Our options for our set up pretty much are a CVT( belt system) with a hi-lo box, or a manually shifted tranmission from an ATV. We know about CVT's, but are expanding our horizons to the ATV trannies to see if they will work decently. This one seemed to be a good bet so far from what I'm reading.

We will never need to pull 1600lbs...at least I dont' think so... if this tranny can hold up to that...It's plenty strong for us...and the fabricating is not problem...all part of the competition...it's an engineering competition I might add. _nicko_
