Thread: Did us people get into trikes because they were cheaper than quads or other reasons?

Its funny, I was one of those kids that never had any fun toys when growing up. All i had was a 10 speed bike. I am 42 now so I was a child of the early '80s. I always dreamed of having a trike or minibike or something with an engine, but my parents would never let me have one. I never had any 22 rifles either which I also wanted. Same for video games, I just had a simple atari 2600 and 7 games, always wanted more.

So as I got older and my kids moved out, I started getting the things I wanted as a kid that I never had. I collect video games like mad (have probably 1000+ cartridges for various systems from 2600 up to the N64), I collect guns (30+), now collect trikes as of 2 months ago (have 6 now), etc. I am now old enough to get a lot of the toys that I always wantd but never had. Heck, I never even had any friends who owned cool trikes but they did own minibikes.

But the cheap factor really helps with most of my nostalgic hobbies (except for guns!!).

As with others here, there was no quads when I got into riding and now it is just cool. When you pull up with a trailer load of trikes, everyone turns and looks. Who doesn't like the attention....

I get them because quads are a dime a dozen, and dirt bikes are a dime every 10 dozen. Every time I go out, it seems like people are checking my trikes out way more than anything else.

I have more fun on them, quads and bikes are fun, but trikes always top my fun o meter

I have been riding trikes off and on since 1984....my first trike i was 9 years old. I have also owned many 4 wheelers, but its not the same. Everyone one has one of those these days. Rolling into town and unloading a trike is priceless to me when you are turning heads. I believe they are funner to ride, and handle as good if not better than any brand new 4 wheeler you can purchase. As far as performance goes, my well tuned Tecate that i currently own, will dust the 450's, all 660's and 700's out there. 2 strokes rule.......if I wanted a ticking time bomb 450 thats cost thousands to repair, I would bye one! I grew up on 3 wheelers. I think I was always too short to ride two wheelers. I rode my first (rented) ATC90 on a beach at 12. I soon got my own 110 at 13 after mowing a million yards. After 2million more yards I got a an 85 200x and loved it! My parents moved down to Mexico and I was in a riders paradise. Huge open mountainous areas to ride. Perfect for 3 wheelers. In 86 I was lucky enough to smuggle down a 250R. I was the only one in the area with this strange new thing! People were blown away when this balloon tire bike could keep up with the motocrossers.
Then 4 wheelers came out and they just did not have the same feel. You ride the bikes very differently (at least when you are going fast). I now have all 3 types. I ride the 4 wheeler when I feel lazy, the 2 wheeler when I want to go fast and the 3 wheeler when I feel rowdy. Haha. Good times.

I had a 4wd quad, got rid of it because I never used it much lately. I'm not much into driving through mud bogs and water, which seems to be the norm around here. Wanted something inexpensive to drive around on dry trails, and figured the trike would be the ticket. Now I'm just loving the trike and can't get out enough. I like the way you ride a trike, as opposed to steering around an 600-800 lb quad. As for the fun factor, trikes bring out all sorts of reactions. Last night a guy drove up and asked if we were driving those death machines around. Turned out he was just joking, and had had trikes himself for many years, with fond memories.

i got into them because my best friend had 2 when I was 14 and we rode them all summer for nearly 3 years. Then fast cars, girls and beer changed my priorites.
after i turned 30 i wanted to relive my youth and got back into it .
i still love them as much as I did when I was 14 !!

3 wheelers have been and addiction all my life. My first trike was a Yamaha 225dx. Been hooked ever since. I have owned many quads, but trikes are my passion. I can out trail ride most quads without thinking twice on my trikes!!!

I grew up on trikes and quads and bought my first trike a couple of years ago cause I missed riding them so much and I wanted a project, I have since focused on quads though because you can not race a 3-wheeler in anywhere but Ohio it seems haha.

I got my first trike about a year ago, an 82 atc 200. My neighbor had it sitting in his garage for the last 13 yrs, he rebuilt the carb but couldn't get it to run. All I did was put the airbox on and it fired up. I paid him $100. I did some serious cleaning and she looks pretty good, just needs a tank and seatpan/cover. I will never get rid of that thing, she is one of my favs. So in the last year I have purchased at least half a dozen trikes including 2 200x's and a 350x. Paid $225 for the 350x and dumped about $400 into it and a ton of hours. I just love the wicked machines!

back in 88 my older bro brought home an 86 250r and at 9 years old i fell in love , it was the coolest looking thing i had ever seen, he took me for a ride and scared the crap out of me ! after that i was hooked , the sound , smell and the stance of a three wheeler is the coolest thing since sliced bread.
i grew up riding dirtbikes and got my first trike at 13. a klt 200 i think an 82 or 83. then i got my 200x about 3 years ago, now i am saving for the 86 250r, the beast that started it all for me

had this discussion over the weekend with a bunch of quad riders. 1st trike was in 74. I have both but prefer trikes cuz of the "Your a duckin nut riding that" and the "Hey that thing is sooo cool" comments. Also no one wants to ride it cuz of the "It'll kill ya" factor. Tecate50 is right about one thing....you eat up quads and spit'em out....as far as cost well that is another story, money is no object for my R racer. If it needs it, it gets it no questions asked. They can cost ya in the end but doesn't everything

    Good Question!

I often wonder the same thing. For me, I started out on a quad and than rode my brother-inlaws suz 125 3 wheeler and it was so fun! Made the quad so unenjoyable. But I had never owned a 3 wheeler so when my wife surprised me on fathers day or b-day (don't recall now) with 2 Honda ATC's (185, 200s package deal for $250) I rode that 200s up and down the street for hours. I was hooked! I have not ridden our 250 Pol quad since. But I expected the prices to be so high like dirt bikes and quads but when I started looking around everything was so cheap that the love just got worse. I can get some sweet as$ R's or 350X's round here for $1500. Any quad that cheap around here that is worth a dam has been beating down or needs lots of work.

So for me it was the ATC + the cheap price. As stated a million times before one you get a 3 wheeler you are addicted. I have 7 or 8 3 wheelers (90s, 185, 200s, 200x), and guess I have maybe $650 in all of them. The most I have ever paid for a 3wlr is $400 and that was for my 200x.

3 wheelers rule and thats just all there is to it.
