The bottom of your shock bolts to a "dogbone" flip the dog bone upside down, you will gain some that way, also on the top of the shock spring there are two 1/8 inch thick adjustment "nuts" they look like oversized washers, loosen the top one then tighten the bottom one, this should give you some more height, if it is still spongy then you need to have your shock rebuilt. Hope that helps, oh by the way a special tool is used to adjusting that but in a pinch a punch andhave done the trick for me
On an 83 he won't have the dogbone. The shock mounts right to the swinger. You could switch to the 84-85 swinger and do it.

That's right, good call. I forgot that, my bad. You can still adjust the shock though!
well, i just went out to adjust the nuts, and i found out that both are already at the bottom. how do i add nitrogen or whatever to raise it? can i just add air?

u can always get and 84 85 swing arm and then put a 350x rear shock under it and 350x front end that would sure raise it up

i jusr recently bought a 84 swinger for my 83 x.... a 350x shock will bolt right up>?
No, you cannot add air. The shock was designed for nitrogen, and if you add air, the shock will be ruined. Special tools are neccessary for rebuilding the shock, and removing the cap on the canister to gain access to the filler valve. Does the shock feel bouncy if you jump on it? If so, time for a rebuild. It will need new seals, and re-charge. If the shock is tightned all the way, it should be STIFF, even for a 200+ pound guy, and would not bounce if the seal is good. Sometimes the best bet is to go on ebay, and a decent non blown one can usually be had for around 20-30$.
The 350x shock mod requires some fabrication. You have to modify the rear dog bone, or make a custom mount on the 83. The front end mod requires the 350x tripples, forks, cutting the turn stop, and basically all the other 350x components.
