1984 Big Red 200ES Carb Rebuild Kit

    First time post...

Looking to get my father's old Big Red up and running again. He passed away last year and I considered selling it, but I just couldn't do it. Basically it runs at idle and low speads, but when you pour on the go juice it sputters and almost kills. I saw some Shindy rebuild kits for $20 online. Are they any good or is there something else I should be looking into?

    Thanks!

I have been working through a bucket of carbs for 185,200,200x and I have yet to need a rebuild kit. I use a gallon of white vinegar that was $1.90 on sale at the grocery store.

I disassemble the carb including the pin for the float and drop them in the bucket of vinegar. I then pull out the parts, one at a time starting with the cleanest ones first and brush them with an old toothbrush and drop them into a second bucket of water. After all the parts are cleaned, I
reassemble the carb and then blast every opening with compressed air to make sure the opening is clean.

I then test the carb with a lawnmower gas tank full of water. I use the mower tank to make sure that the float needle allows gas flow, but doesn't overflow. I figure better to spill water from an overflow, than a bunch of gas. Once I have confirmed that the carb flows without overflow, I hit the carb with compressed air again to dry off the water. I can tell that I cleaned the carb well when the engine starts from the first short pull and runs better.

I plan to reuse the vinegar to clean the rust out of gas tanks and then use it to clean rusty old chains. I plan to treat the tanks and chains with a phosphoric acid solution to prevent further rusting, after they are first cleaned with the vinegar solution.

The used up vinegar can probably be disposed of down the sewer drain.

I see. I guess the reason I ask about the rebuild kit is that I have disassembled the carb twice and cleaned it and the the bike still sputters at moderate and high rpms.

I have used fresh gas too.

Is there some adjustment I am missing? Or should I just rebuild it?

Good God! Their prices are way up there. I think for $20 the Shindy kit will be worth a shot.
