250es big red problem

Hi i just got a 1985 250es big red. when i first turned it on it didnt idle so obviously i had to adjust the carb well i did and it idled but after i took it for a ride it idled too high. i let it sit for awhile and i put it into reverse and i hit throttle and i let off and it just kept going. so i knew it had to be the carb but even when i adjust it it either idles too high or bogs out. help?

It may be time to rebuild that carb. Rebuild kits are less than $20 on ebay.

ive been looking at carb rebuild kits on hyperparts.com but im worried that if i buy it i wont know how to use it

You just take it apart, clean it with carb cleaner and dry with compressed air, and replace things as they came out... really not that hard if you are organized and keep a neat work area.

Check your throttle cable routing aswell
Mine did the same when I would turn the steering to the max, mostly when I'm reversing.
The cable was squeezed between the gas tank and the frame.

Buy a rebuild kit. The gaskets will not survive being taken apart, and silicone is your worst enemy...

I agree with ailll1; check your cables first. I had a similar problem happen but with my choke cable rather than my throttle cable. Every time I turmed the bars hard right, the idle would race. It turned out to be my choke cable (the hard outter plastic covering) had pulled itself out of the rubber boot it goes into at the carb, thus causing the choke to close because of the lack of cable play.

Have had this problem too... Get the cable seated correctly, and put a cable tie around the boot.... (and make sure the cables routed correctly)

Same thing with me , Your jets have been cleaned beyond repair. So when you start your wheeler , It will Idle very low to where it'll kill if you don't constantly give it revs.Thus making it to where your carb has to be operated for about 5minutes till it'll idle where it should.
