Fixing shift shaft splines

Has anyone had any lucky fixing the splines on the shift shaft. The splines where the shifter goes on are all kinds of buggered up. Are there any ways to fix the splines without replacing the shifter shaft?

I think I know the answer, but figured I would ask if someone came up with something I haven't thought of.

you do know the answer to this.you can weld the shifter on for a quick fix but youll have to grind them back off if you need to get in the motor

Yeah, I know.. I thought about taking a fine file to the splines to "reshape them". It would probably be more trouble than it would be worth.

i have also drilled a hole through the shifter and shaft then ran a nail through to hold,it worked too

Doug, I was with Howdy when he done this type of emergency field repair on trikeholics machine at one of those trikefest meets (can't remember the year) and it held up until he replaced the shift shaft its self, some thing like a year and a half later (and it was still working fine too)

What was done was the pinch gap on the shifter was filed open (and probably forced open some too), a strip of alu (from a pop can) as wide as the spline area of the clamping part of the shifter was rolled around the stripped out shift shaft splines and the shifter re-installed and tightened down.
Perhaps get you by until winter tear down,,,,

shifter shafts are easy to replace... just tack weld it til you have a good reason to pull the clutch cover

I recently bought a shifter for Kendra's motor. When I went to put it on the splines on the bottom of the shift shaft are fubar'd. Looks like the motor I bought was laid on the shifter shaft and drug across concrete or something. It's just the bottom of the splines. But it's enough that the shifter won't go on. Can you replace the shifter shaft without splitting the cases?

According to the manual you can. Pull the left and right crankcase covers to gain access. Once off the gearshift spindle should pull out ( hehe pull out?).

if there is still good spines I would try filing the bad ones so the shifter will fit... I though you were trying to fix stripped splines.. and yes you can replace the shift shaft without splitting cases, just have to pull the clutch cover..

Some you pull the left cover, some the right and then other parts may have to come off, but no splitting cases; Maybe a clutch with a special pronged socket though.....

I didn't work for me as well, thought it was just cause I have a low post count, guess not though.

i have drilled a small 1/8th hole on the endof the shaft with 1/2 the hole on the shifter and 1/2 on the shaft and run a small cap screw into the hole and i have done it a few times with great results and its still removeable.
