my buddy brought over his 250x, is this how the reverse lever is hooked up.

Not from the factory.

Some people felt the OEM reverse set-up was hard to use, and had to use their hand to lift the original lever.
So someone came up with that Idea, so you could just use your foot to step down on that extra shifter, so you could keep both hands on the bars and get reverse quicker.
It wont hurt anything.

The 250X was easy to get reverse on, with the factory set-up. The lever had linkage that routed it up above the front sprocket and you used your heel to kick it up.

Then when they put electric start on the 300EX, they had to reroute that linkage from the factory to clear the starter, and that made it hard to get to, so what you have there became a mod for the 300EX to get reverse without using your hand.

It wont hurt anything like that.
